What exactly is involved with an induction ??? What happens? :?

There's a few different ways you can be induced, in most cases only a membrane sweep is needed.
• A membrane sweep
• Inserting a Prostaglandin pessary or gel
• Artificially rupturing the membranes (breaking your waters)
• OxytocinSyntocinon-tube Drip
I was induced with the drip, wouldn't recommend it personally, but I was 3days into labour with no baby, so the first 3 weren't appropriate.

Thanx Redshoes......

Is an induction longer and more painful than a natural starting birth???

I was induced with my 2nd pregnancy as she was 11 days over due. I didn't find it that bad really. I had a pessery in at 11am ish and was 10cm at 6pm so for me it wasn't too bad. It did bring the pains on pretty quick though so you sort of go from nothing to bad contractions in a couple of minutes. I had the drip in with my 1st after the epidural slowed my labour down and I can't say I noticed it being there but like I said I had an epidural in. I had a sweep with my 3rd and it was a bit uncomfortable but it did the trick and my waters broke 24 hours later. Alls I can say about the induction is that I wish I hadn't accepted the first date hey gave me (easy to say now, I know) I don't think I was ready as my 2nd stage labour was awful cos she was in a bad position. I think if I'd of waited a couple more days maybe things might of gone better.

Beany sounds like you had a traumatic experience!!! :(

Thanx so much for the info.. I ask because my midwife yesterday said that if things havent progressed then she'll give me a sweep (in 2 weeks time) and the a week after that an induction....however...she didnt tell me anything at all about what an induction involves..I know I have a couple of weeks yet..but I just needed to know what could happen if things didnt move onto a natural labour... and what an induction was all about!

Thanx again!!

You don't have to have an induction, if you go overdue you can be monitored regularly and babies HB checked and placenta scanned.

I was induced and was in labour for 3 days it was horrendous. But my waters had already gone so it was recommended for me.

You don't have to be induced, but if you are in hospital then they follow certain protocols and decisions aren't always made based on what you'd like, but what they believe you need. Labour doesn't follow a set timetable for everyone, there's nothing wrong with waiting and seeing, just as there's nothing wrong with getting a helping hand, overall most Mums agree babies start the labour when they're ready, helping hand or not.
A drip is usually the last step, and only administered once your in hospital, and once it kicks in you go from where you were to fast, strong, sometimes constant contractions, so although some may like the idea to speed up a long labour, I personally found it too much, and then needed an epidural. My labour was 86hrs but only after having the drip, less than 12hrs before Isaac was born, did I find labour hard going.
All I can say to you is that there's nothing to be afraid of, and always ask questions, they know the answers and won;t mind telling you, and always say what you feel at the time too, you need to feel you have a voice, and if not, have your birth partner know your wishes, and very best wishes, not long to go :cheer:  :cheer:

I was more frightened of the not knowing and lack of info re. an induction.... my midwife said about it so matter of factly... as if I didnt have any choice and it was the norm... Yet didnt tell me what in entailed!!

Thanx for the info and advice...

And hopefully not long to go Redshoes.. for a natural labour :)

i have nothing to compare it to, but my induction wasn't as bad as what i was expecting. The worse thing was being hooked up all the time to a ecg monitor ( i needed to be as i had complications, the ladies in the beds next to me didn't).

they told me to expect it to get intence quickly, but then i was induced at 37 weeks. my body wasn't as prepared as what you would expect someone further along to be.

fingers crossed you don't even have to consider induction and bubba makes an arival soon.

It may all be old wives tales but do what you can to start off the labour yourself:

Eat Fresh Pineapple
Eat a Spicy curry
Drink raspberry leaf tea by the bucket full
Bounce on a birthing ball
Have sex repeatedly (ensuring OH comes inside you)
Clean the windows/house from top to bottom

lol I did try all of these and have to say it didnt work but worth giving a go anyhoo! lol

I was induced at 11 days over due, went for a sweep on day 9 but midwife didnt thk head was engaged so I was sent for scan to check for low lying placenta..all was well so I was booked in for friday morning..

Arrived t 8am, was to be given a pessary but midwife had trouble reaching my cervix..I hd a further 2 midwives having go until one reached it which hurt me like mad...I panicked as I didnt thnk I was going to cope with any pain...had a few niggly pains, went off for a walk and coffee. Examined me at 4pm, 2 midwives again struggled to find cervix...felt a gush and my waters had gone. There was blood in waters so they went to get the main midwife from labour ward...she reached cervix, dd a sweep and inserted a second pessary. told me my baby would be born by morning...nothing!!! Bit of niggling back ache but no rel pain.

By 11pm, they sent OH home and I had the ward to myself as all the other girls who had come in same time as me, were all by now on lbour ward!!

I managed to get rest, and was taken down to labour ward at 9am next day. Hooked to drip, and they increased it gradually over a few hours untl the maximum. I was able to stand and rock to relieve back ache...had various internals over the next hours, cervix still couldnt really be reached, they offered me gas and air at one point as it was so distressing. At 7pm it was decided I hadnt progessed past 2.5cm, and they didnt want baby getting distressed so I was taken for a c section.

It all happened quickly after that, and we were soon in theatre. I can honestly say it was such a fantastic experience, I loved the birth and have no bad memories.

The only bad part of my induction was the internals, having to have so many but mine was an akward one

All the other girls who were induced same time had great, speedy births.

i had a sweep thursday and baby came friday. cant say whether or not it helped really but baby was here next day so to speak.so basically about 16hrs later i had my baby after having sweep.

Fingers crossed  He comes out before the sweep...and the induction!! :)

well i had an induction and i was fine with it.
i had the tablet inserted and that started it all off, it was all over by the next morning so not all inductions are bad!!!

I was fine with it too - had a pessary inserted at 9.30am (a little uncomfortable), then had my waters broken and a drip inserted at 3.30pm, and by 6.30 pm I'd had her! The only thing was that once the drip was in the contractions intensified very quickly which I wasn't prepared for.
