hi,
i am so worried about the health of my baby i am 17 weeks pregnant... i have been told by my sister in-law that i shouldn't eat mayo, prawns and eggs- also that i should drink coffee... i have had all this during pregnancy although only in v. small amounts but i have only just been told this and immediately paniced i don't know what to do?

shop bought mayo is fine just avoid home made/ or in restaurants as you dont know how it was made. prawns are fine i think as long as they are cooked properly.
coffee should be drunk in moderation

If you've still been feeling ok and none of the food has made you ill then you should be fine. If you are really worried then call your midwife, but I would assume you would be fine. With the coffee, just make sure you don't drink too much, and make sure you drink enough water so the caffeine doesnt dehydrate you. With the prawns the main worry is food poisoning, so if you have been alright and not been ill on them then you should be fine. You should stick to having them hot (like in currys/scampi) instead of cold (like in sandwiches).. and yes shop bought mayo is ok it's only home made stuff that's not cool cos it contains raw egg which encourages salmonella which baby doesn't get on with.
Read this thread - there's a link on there as to what you should and shouldn't eat :)

As Vicki and Leckershell said shop bought mayo is fine with the coffee they recommend no more than 2 small cups a day or 6 small cups of tea. Eggs are fine too as long as they're well done no runny yellows until bubs is born I'm afraid.

I was advised to avoice all shellfish but I know some of the girls on here say its fine as long as its very well cooked.

Don't go OTT, if it is that bad for you then you doctor would have said so before.

Mayo is fine, prawns are not a problem, infact fish is VERY essential and good for you in a pregnancy, contains zinc. Coffee, like every thing, all in moderation.

Put that worrying behind you! We're not the first people on the planet. Think of the food and drink that our mothers and their mothers consumed.
I'm sure your sister has your interests at heart but what I would say is try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy. Your baby has survived so far and if it hadn't you would know.
