Dear all,

I haven't posted for a long time, but unfortunately this is not because my situation has changed. I've been obsessed with having a baby since I was 17, but haven't had one as it has never been an appropriate time and I've put my teaching career first. I am now 27.

Originally I was going to wait until after I'd finished my degree, but then got onto the PGCE. I was then going to wait until after my PGCE, but ended up being offered a good job.

I then decided to do three years at this school and my partner wasn't prepared to have a baby during those years as he wouldn't move to where I was.

We have now bought a flat and moved in together. I have a new teaching job and so now should be the ideal time to have a baby.

Unfortunately the job is only a maternity cover for somebody else with the contract ending in April, so I can't get pregnant now. I would not be entitled to any maternity leave or a job to return to.

I now have to wait until I (hopefully) get a permanent position in September and then wait 5 months before getting pregnant so that I qualify for the full maternity pay... I think this is how it works - if anyone out there is a secondary school teacher in the UK and knows how it works I'd love to here from you!!

I'm crying all the time with this obsession with having a baby. I don't even understand where all the tears come from. It's especially bad at the end of my period.

Love to hear from anybody, especially those who feel they just can't wait any longer, but have to. xxxx

Aw, I feel for you! I'm not a teacher so don't know the ins and outs.

I had to start putting plans into action back in march, I didn't realise I'd have to be paying NI for forever to qualify for maternity allowance (I'm self employed so don't have the luxury of maternity leave!) but I've been paying long enough now and when I think back, it doesn't seem that long ago when I registered, it just felt like forever at the time.

Hope you get some help

Hey Hun, I am a teacher and I am in a similar dilemma. However there is good news.

Are you working for a local authority? If you are then you only have to work for a year as a teacher continuously (and that can include changing local authorities) and have worked for the same employer for 26 weeks (by 15th week before baby due date), so have worked for a week approx before getting pregnant to qualify for the full maternity package.

If you haven't worked for the same employer then you don't qualify for SMP part but instead (as you have been working) qualify for MA, which is the same rate.

The issue is getting a job at the end of your pregnancy. Your best bet is prob to apply for jobs come jan - April (for sept) and when you get one, even if it is temp for a year, you can start TTC. That way if you fall straight away you will still qualify for full benefits with MA and have job security.

Hope this helps Hun xx

Thank you so much. You may have changed my life! Thanks to your message, I looked into maternity pay and discovered I am entitled if I get pregnant this month. I had no idea. See my other thread 'oh my goodness!' that I've just posted!! Thank u thank u!!!! xxx
