How to stop swaddling?

I've been swaddling my little girl since she was about 4 weeks but now, as she's approaching 4 months and beginning to learn how to roll over, I think we need to stop swaddling.

The thing is, whenever I try to put her down unswaddled, she immediately startles awake! Doesn't matter how deep of a sleep she's in or if I try to hold her arms in while putting her down.

She sometimes wakes up, while swaddled, when I first put her down but she tends to immediately go back to sleep...this just doesn't happen without the swaddle though..

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I've Just done this as my boy was tightly swaddled. I swapped to a swaddle bag that was looser and has poppers for arms. I did a couple if weeks in the bag then took one arm out. They say to do one at a time but he wanted both out. We had a couple of nights a bit unsettled and had to go I to him and put my hands on him while he settles himself but overall was easier than I thought xxx

We just went cold turkey with the swaddle when my little girl was about 5 months old. We had a few nights of slightly unsettled sleep but within a week she was sleeping fine again!

Thank you both! I think I'll start swaddling more loosely and then try the one arm at a time method. Fingers crossed!
