I am just not sleeping through the night. Even before I was pregnant, I needed a good 7-8hrs sleep a night to function. Now I generally wake up around 3 am and just lightly doze on and off til the alarm goes at 6:20. It's OK on the weekends because I get an afternoon nap but on work days, I leave the house by 7-7:30 and don't get back til 7:30 in the evening because of a long commute. It's really getting to me now and I'm going to have to keep going til the end of June.

The reason I can't sleep is because I'm just not comfortable. I try using a long pillow and sleep on my side but always wake up on my back and have back ache. Once I wake up with backache, I don't really get comfortable again and so don't go back to proper sleep. Does anyone have any advice for getting a good night sleep - or is this just something I should accept as part of pregnancy?

I am already the same. And I love sleeping so much. I go to sleep and then start waking up at about 5, doze off for half an hour etc until I get sick and tired at about 7.30 am and just get up
And when i go to sleep at night, I'm really tired, been working all day etc. And still can't sleep. Annoying as anything! I'm not much help but at least you know you're not on your own  x

Depends how you sleep on the long pillow I find.

I found mine too full to start with so sat my arse on it on the sofa for a week, using it as a cushion for backside and back soon thinned it down a bit.

Then to sleep with it I lie on my side, roll onto it a little so bump is wedged into it and then throw my top leg over it and keep it forward so I am tilting slightly forward not just straight on my side. Also wedging it a bit between my legs then keeps it in position. And then I tend to put my arms into the recovery position, again to keep me tilting forward so as to not roll back. Cuddle into it sort of thing, but weight tilting forward that little bit. Might work :)

I've never once rolled onto my back from that position and sleep well, even though I wake a lot to wee.

You can also sleep with a pillow behind you to stop you rolling back.

i sleep with a pillow longways in between my legs and under my bump. i still sleep on my back sometimes, but that has got too uncompfy too.

i wake up 3 or 4 times a night, change position and go back to sleep. my ribs feel really bruised when i turn over in the night.

It must be so hard for you not sleeping. Not sure what to suggest as I never had any problems with sleep in my first pregnancy or this time around but I'm not big yet so I might suffer a bit later on.

Perhaps experiment more with your long pillow as Sherlock suggested.

I really hope you manage to improve your sleep pattern.

Thanks for the advice girls  I will try experimenting with the pillow a little more....Sherlock, I agree, the pillow is too thick a the mo. I'll try sitting on it so that it's flatter and fits under the bump. I the pillow may actually be tilting me over to my back but without it, my bump pulls me forward. At least I'm heavy enough to squish it down flatter quite quickly :D

Sorry you've got the same problem Berit. Hope you get more sleep too.

I was a stomach person before my bump got in the way! I find that if I lie on my side with a pillow slightly under my bump it is comfortable and takes the weight off a bit. Also I am a fan of a pillow between the legs. I am definately going to buy one of those long body pillows when I get the chance!
