I really wanted to go to a mid-wife led birthing unit but now I'm not sure it is possible as 40 minutes away.

Where are you ladies going?

They've booked me in at the local maternity centre, it's attached to a hospital though so has consultant care on hand if needed. I was hoping to at least talk about the possibility of a home birth but it was scrapped as soon as I mentioned it because there have been previous problems with my blood pressure :(

I went to a birthing unit with my first and that was about 30minutes away from where we lived. I have only got my experience to go on, but I had a wonderful experience and can't praise birthing units enough. I was very lucky to have had a text book (well not quite as it was a 45minute labour) pregnancy and labour and had a water birth.

:eh:whats a birthing unit????

A birthing centre is a centre run by midwifes rather than doctors. They have birthing pools, etc... but because there is not a doctor you usually get limited pain relief. (you're not going to get an epidural for example)

Its a more relaxed environment rather than a clinical one. Somewhere between a home birth and a hospital birth.
