my baby is 12 days old and currently wants a feed every 2 hours and drains 4oz. the midwife has said thats too much too often and to make him go 3-4 hours with 4oz.... but he wont take any less and he gets so so so upset when hes hungry after 2 hours.....

we have been making him wait til 3 hours now as i dont want to over feed him but he gets so upset he must be hungry (hes giving all the hunger signs, we try everything else-nappy change winding comforting etc) and its at regular intervals and he moves his face to the side looking for the bottle so its def hunger.

surely if hes hungry for it i should feed him it??? but midwife thinks its too much....

any suggestions?? hes been doing this since day 5 .....

xxxxx

I personally would feed him what he wants, when he wants, I was always told to demand feed. Do what you think is right for your LO xxx

I have heard many mixed opinions on this.

When you feed lil one 4 oz of formula is he ever sick afterwards? If so, is it quite alot or just little bits that the wind has forced out? x

he can be sick quite a bit, sometimes more than others, mostly just little bits though but it really varies, he never cries after a feed at all and the sick doesnt bother him at all.....

Hmm.. Well I was going to say if he is sick quite alot, his tummy is not quite big enough for all the formula so it sounds as if he is just a greedy lil monkey but with you saying he isn't sometimes then its hard to say.

Personally I do think 4oz for a 12 day old baby is to much, Harlow is 9 weeks old and she only just drinks 4 oz!

I do understand your predicament though.. This is a tough one. Have you tried giving him cooled boiled water? See if that can hold him off a lil bit longer than 2 hours?

Have you tried distracting your LO when hungry? Emily was always hungry in the first few weeks and now I tried to distract her when she was constantly hungry - walk around the house, play with her, change her nappy... Try to make her forget she is hungry! Sometimes it works and sometimes not!

My sister ended up changing her LO to hungry baby formula when he was 2 weeks old as he was doing the same as your LO. He was a big baby though, he was 10lbs 4 oz born. This really helped and he would go 4 hours between feeds then x

Thats strange my mw was pleased when I said lo was drinking 4 oz every two hours and he is 3 weeks tomorrow its amazing how mw differ in opinions. Id just keep an eye on his weight personally.

yeah i think its difference of opinion quite alot of the time! he was born 8lbs 12oz and is now 8lbs 15oz......

i try the distraction and i gave him a bit of water but i didnt feel right giving it to him :s does anyone else give their lo's water???

midwife said no to hungry baby milk aswell!!????

xxxx

I posted somewhere else that hungry baby says ok from birth however mw and hv say no before 3 months around here. Its also likely to cause constipation to start. It seems harsh they have you worried like that my lo was 7lb 4 at birth and 8 lb at 10th days they seemed happy with that.

It's all very well the mw's saying these things but they aren't the ones who have to listen to their babies screaming. I demand feed with Albert, if I'm hungry I go to the kitchen and get myself something to eat so why shouldn't he be fed when he's hungry? I do however stop him every ounce to wind and he doesn't seem to be sick that way xxxxxxx

I've always fed on demand (bit diff as I bf) but I don't think leaving a hungry baby to cry is good for anyone. I'd feed when lo needs it xx

Hi Hun, I FF and I did feed on demand , however my LO has fell into a 3 hours routine between feeds now . I think when your babyis hungry you should feed then and not wait . Am surprised your MW told you this . I also don't think your feeding him to much at ten days old my LO would take between 4/5 oz . Some babies are a lot hungrier than others and we need to remember baby's are not textbook . They don't always follow the 4hrs between feeds etc or follow the amount of milk the tin says they should be having.

As my LO was so hungry i changed her to hungry baby milk and it's the best thing I did she is a diffrent baby and a lot happier. I know a lot of people don't recommend hungry baby milk but for my baby it works. It's also not as expensive as people make out I give ruby Sma hungry baby milk and a big tin is 5.99in home and bargain if you have one of them near you xxx

thanks so much ladies this has made me feel alot better, he's differing between 3 hours and then 2 hours so im not gonna stress over feeding him 4oz when he's going 2-3 hours. the mws have made me feel stupid in hospital and out of hospital and to be honest i agree that if a baby is crying for food then you should feed them!!

ill keep going how we are and when my health visitor comes ill double check it with her, and maybe move him onto hungry baby when hes a little bit older xxxx

yeah it really is very hard!! wish i was still breastfeeding but hey thats a different story!

thanks again xxx

Yeah me too but that was my decision to stop no medical reason, whoever said ff babies sleep better needs kicking not that it was my reason for stopping.

I had conflicting "advice" given to me by m/w's one told me not to use a dummy, to feed him as much as he wants when he wants then the other m/w was like yours and told me not to feed him too much to often :s !

Personally i'd go with your own instincts after all no one knows your baby better than you (not even the m/ws) and after all they are only giving advice its not law lol xxxxx

Hunny have you tried expressing? We've had very similar experiences with our hospitals and breast feeding but don't let it put you off totally. You can express every 2-3 hours which is the same as baby will feed and if you produce too much then refridgerate or even freeze it. Expressing is fine, although I was majorly embarrassed to do it in front of my OH at first, never thought he'd sit there and watch me being milked like a Fresian lol. Also the relief of pressure in my boobs is sooooo nice.

my milks gone now bb :( i tried expressing in hospital and couldnt get enough for him as he eats alot, it was taking me 20 mins to get an ounce and a half and because my nipple was so cut they said i couldnt express for longer than 20 mins so i couldnt keep going with it!! wish i could start up breastfeeding again though but hes 13 days old now and i stopped on day 5 so think its all gone :(

wish id had the proper help in the first place! they didnt even suggest bf and ff at the same time to satisfy him for longer otherwise i would have done that and given my boob a rest and time to recover a bit :(

got health visitor coming on thursday so will discuss feeding with her and see what her advice is... best its different to all the other advice ive been given lol xxx
