managed to get a doctors appt he has given him antibiotics for his cough as hes not sure what it is said its better to give the medicine so he will be starting it tomorrow just hope it helps, we had to steer clear of a medicine with pelicilin in as both hubbys mum and my sister are severly illergic and dint want to risk it with his allergies already!!! doctor gave us a syringe to use even though i told him e will only drink it off a spoon!!
thanks all again for your great help

hi all,
well lastweek we all came down with a cold thomas caught it but only had a runny nose which i thought was ok it only lasted a day and then was gone,
but 2 days ago he started coughing and it has got worse and worse he sounds so rattily, hes not sleeping at night just screaming we have just got him up and he is boiling temp of 39 which is high fever on my strip going into the next square, we have given him 2.5ml of calpol but hes still not right
is there anything else we can do for him hes just wearing a vest and nappy, when should we call a doctor? im worried as we dont drive and have no money for taxi to the out of hours dr's which is ages away and no family are close to give us a life so we have to hope that a dr will come out they normaly wont :(
i think that all the snot and rubbish out his nose has gone onto his chest as hes missing the roof of his mouth there is nothing to stop it doing that and he has a runny nose again :(
any help would be great
thanks
xx

have you phoned NHS direct for their advice?? They'll probably be able to give you some good advice and maybe help out with the out of hours doctors. If his temp hasn't come down then he should really see a doctor hun IMO

I hope his temp comes down and he feels better soon x

I would second what Leanne said NHS Direct are great and for a baby the doctors should come out.

Awww hun, what a worry. I can onyl give you advice based on what I have done before. I would sit it out till the morning, give him the calpol when the fours hours is up. I have a feeling the doc would just say 'its viral'.
Mines usually get high temps when they have a cold sometimes i am close to calling the docs.

If you think something is not right though, you call the doc straight away hun.

Call NHs direct and tell them there is no way you can get to out of hours. It is a nightmare trying to get our doctor to come out too but they will if you nag them enough.

Call them babe, they will be able to help  poor little thing aww tis horrible seeing them like that

il wait to see if his temp goes down calpol normaly takes 20 minutes doesnt it?
god i feel so useless when hes ill :(
thanks all
xx

Open a window in the room to let cool air in, if his temp goes up - or doesn't start to come down in 20 mins get a tepid (luke warm) face cloth and run it over his body. Don't let the cloth get cold as this will make him shiver and get warmer.

If his temp doesn't start to come down with that then I'd ring the out of hours docs/hospital. insist that you can't get to them and they need to come to you - tell them you've done the above.

If you have child ibuprofen then I'd give him a does of that if the temp isn't lowering but space it at least an ahour away from the calpol.

Try not to take his temp more than every 15 mins as you'll drive yourself mad and it won't achieve anything.

Hope he improves soon, the calpol should work but sometimes it takes a while once the temp is up that high.

Ditto the above in calling and insisting someone comes out if need be. They can do (lots of out of hours docs have drivers to take them to patients so its not like they have to put themselves out if on call).

Hope he is feeling better soon hun

thanks all just had a lookie on nhs direct website and he seems to have all the symtoms of croup so im hoping its just that, will keep a close eye on him overnight though and will take him to the dr's tomorrow
thanks again
xx

I hope hes gonna be ok manda  I had croup when i was a baby and got it all throughout childhood.
My mum used to boil a kettle continuously to let steam go in the room and that helped, or perhaps run the hot tap in the bathroom and sit in there with him for a while x
You got my number if you need me x

Wanted to send lots of hugs
I do hope he's better very soon

thanks hun great ideas there will give them a try if he gets worse he is sleeping at th moment keeps waking up though :( his temp has gone down to low fever for the moment
will just have to wait and see what the doctor says tomorrow

Manda, if you're worried at any time, ring the doctor or an ambulance. Don't worry about wasting anyone's time or upsetting anyone. This is YOUR baby and you need to do what you feel is right at the time. I always say you're better safe than sorry! No-one will tell you off for getting your son checked out.

You do need to be careful with croup too though. It can often get better at night when the temperature generally drops, so he might seem all of a sudden better. My nephew had it last year and was really bad at home, then when he went out into the night air to go to the walk in center, he seemed fine... once inside again he was bad and was put on a nebuliser, then eventually admitted to hospital for one night for steroids (he does have asthma too though)

Just do what you feel you need to. If you need someone to see to him, call. Don't worry about what anyone will say xxxxxxx

thanks hun
the only other thing thats bothering me is that hes hardly wee'd today hes normaly a big wetter ive had wet nappies but there were only just wet iykwim also his pooh is normaly clay like dark and sticky today it was green/yellow and runny
it may of been something hes eaten that dint agree with him (due to his allergies most things dont) his soft spot is perfect though not raised or sunken so dont think hes dehydrated
xx
