Ok my old laptop broke last year and it was fab. I bought a new one but I was in a bit of a rush and just got it without checking it out too much

It has windows home basic which is pooooo. I don't have word/excel or anything. Does anyone know where I caan at least download word free of charge - have googled it but i'm bit worried about getting a virus or something :?

This is what i did, and lucky enough i managed to borrow someone elses disc that my dad got and put it all on here.

hmm i should still have my old cd's from my old laptop - should that work??

don't download a word package hun you are almost guranteed to get a virus, plus its ilegal and you are more likley to get caught (you prob wouldnt but just in case) as its traceable.

You need to either borrow someone elses office Package and use their product key, if they dont have a key you can get some online (for free) just google ''microsoft office product keys'' you should get a few sites with them posted up - might me a case of trying 10 before you find one that works. Any office product should work on the Windows Home basic.

If you know someone who has windows premium you can re install that on your laptop with there product key

all the above is illegal by the way, everyone is supposed to have their own copy of each thing even you you buy a laptop & PC for your house, you are supposed to buy 2 copies of office and to of the OS!! Its just a rip off from microsoft. We (as in mum & dad paid for it for their computer and I always nicked it for my laptop lol) always shared the OS and Office package though and never had any problems in 10 years. The new Vista is supposed to me much more traceable though so becarefull if you put that on i.e dont register it!

If you install a better OS then dont forget to back up all you pics, favourites, files etc as they will be wiped - best way is to delete the partition then re install from fresh - will stop any major problems that ''may'' occur.

OpenOffice is a good open source free set up does the same as Word etc. I never used Word at all anymore, its all OpenOffice

http://www.openoffice.org/

Its used mainly by Linux users but there are many Windows platforms of it available :)

Who needs to pay for MS crap when there are so many great free open source equivalents out there 8)

When my PC got repaired the guy who did it came with loads of software and programmes and installed them for free. I think you can contact a repair service and ask them to install everything you need for a small charge I guess.

Thanks for your replies.

I didn't know downloading it off the internet was illegal

I might try that link Sherlock so thanks for that :)
