iv started using splenda and sweetex in my cups of (decaf) tea which i hav around 10 each day, and diet sodas which i hav maybe 3 a day- in an effort to regain my size 6 figure.

but i read some articles on the internet that artificial sweeteners are really really toxic and can mess up ur hormone levels and allsorts

the main thing that worries me is im breast-feeding. i'll take risks for my own vanity but millie is another matter- im scared in case im ruining her health just coz i wanna look better :(

i kno internet is scare-monger-y, but how much of a concern is this? im really hoping someone can reassure me!

i have no clue, but maybe you should stop drinking them.

i'm sure it will be no harm, ask you health visitor. but Hun you should be drinking ten cups... that's far to much

hi hun

im not too sure about splenda & sweetex but I know too many artificial sweeteners arent brilliant for you. I'd reccomend drinking lots of ice cold water instead if you want to be super slim again and maybe limit to 1 can of diet coke or whatever you fancy a day. I know drinking more than this isnt a good idea, plus it bloats you out. The water idea is really good for you and burns calories where your body has to work harder to warm the water up. After a while you'll stop craving tea and soda and you'll look lovely and you'll be safe in the knowledge that Millie is ok too :D

Trixipaws - this is what kellymom has to say

Splenda (sucralose)
There isn't much research on sucralose on which to base advice, however the manufacturer says that it's safe for nursing moms. As of this writing, there have been no studies done on nursing mothers, children or infants. Sucralose appears to be poorly absorbed from the GI tract (11 to 27 percent in adult male volunteers), so that's an indication that it probably wouldn't get into breastmilk at significant levels.
from here

however that is a lotof tea and sodas, perhaps like tillytots suggested swapping some of them for water would be better - it is recommended to drink plenty of water when breastfeeding, whereas tea tends to be a diuretic whichmay mean you are not getting the water you should be

LOL 10 cups a day... That used to be a good day for me of drinking tea before I was pregnant... :rotfl:

I used to have sugar in my tea too... but I switched to earl grey with lots of milk as it was a milder tea and therefore didn't need sugar anymore...

I can now drink normal tea without sugar too... but you need to get used to it... Takes a while, but I've managed to convince DH to drink his tea without sugar now too (and my god, if you see the way he devours chocolate and sweets.. you'll understand that that is a major achievement).

Still can't do coffee though as its way to bitter, but I don't drink coffee that much and try and make it as milky as possible.

As for coke well that stuff is just nasty anyway whether its diet or normal... it just tastes lush when ice cold... can't suggest anything for that I am afraid... I just avoid it because I know it's gut rot... :rotfl:

Hi hun,

Personally, i dont trust these artificial sweetners, mainly due to the fact that they mainly use aspartame.

wiki has quite a good, non biased review with lots of links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame

it might also interest you to know that these sweetners are banned in foods aimed at the under 3's.

have you tried sweetening with honey?
or trying a decaff tea like earl grey that has a naturally sweeter tast anyway?

hope this helps :)

yes honey is what i USED to have! and i used to hav the non-diet sodas as well i worked out that by switching to sweeteners and diet versions i am saving 900 calories each day without even changing my diet!
i already drink decaf tea, coz i kno 10 cups is quite a lot (i do enjoy my tea lol!)
i drink water as well, i hav at least one litre each day, its probably more like 2 litres really.

beanie thanx for the kellymom link, i found it quite reassuring. i didnt kno that honey can contain botulism
isnt that what old women and celebs inject into their faces?!

haha I don't know - but eww if they do.

Yes honey can contain botulism spores but our stomach acid is enough to ill them so there is no danger to us. However they do say not to give honey to a baby under 1 - Seren loves honey and toast now though. No worries about it passing through your milk either as your digestive sytem kills it.

keelymom is fab, I highly recommend it, its my online bible :)
