Can they help with feeding issues?

Riven is feeding but throwing up after every feed and it is projectile vomiting, he is being fed by bottle but I think the flow is wrong he just guzzles it down, which in turn I think makes him up chuck, we have bought the newborn avent teats but they have not made any difference he still throws up, we have started giving him infacol yesterday so I am hoping that will settle him in.

At the moment his feeds are little and often, so we have been doing 20/30ml every 2 hours night and day and this is obviously not enough but he throws up if he has anymore.

We went to the doctors yesterday and she just said that at the moment as he hadn't lost weight last time he was weighed she wanted to leave it a week to see if he does, poor kid didn't weigh a lot anyway if we leave it a week And he keeps throwing up there will be nothing of him not to mention the dehydration he could get in the meantime...

I am just about at my wits end with it and feeling like the crappiest mother in the world, he is so hungry but his poor belly just can't handle big feeds. In turn this is making him grumpy because he is not getting any sleep, he is not pooping because let's be fair he has nothing to poop out.

On a positive note he is peeing a lot....

Sorry for the rant, and back to the original question, can the health visitor advise on feeding?

Thanks xx

Oh hun, poor bubba and poor u! Do u think it may be reflux? Yes HV can advise on feeding- I would def get them involved and c if they can help- think they are more useful than GP's sometimes coz they are more used to dealing with baby issues!
Hope things improve soon and LO doesnt lose any weight xxxx

I'm thinking maybe reflux!! James projectiled all over me last night and him self the sofa the carpet lol it goes far!!! Lol he's on 2 sachets of gaviscon every feed and being weaned early because of it.......does he seem in pain? Does he writhe at all?? Xx

xxx

He doesn't seem as if he is in pain but I am sure that's building, he is a wriggly baby anyway so he doesn't seem much different...

It could be reflux or a milk allergy, but with the allergy diarrhoea normally goes with the vomiting. My HV was fabulous when I swapped over from milk to soya and spoke to my gp about getting him tested for me to save me going for an appointment

Hope you get to the bottom of it soon. He could just have a little stomach and nothing be wrong at all  xxxxxxx

I would bypass HVs, have only ever found them vague, inconsistent and useless tbh. If you are really concerned hun go to gp, if gp is useless ask to be referred to paedeatrician as gp cannot refuse referral requests.

We went to the doc she just said to leave it a week and see if his weight drops....

Hey, not sure if this helps but it sounds like what happened with my lo. She used to projectile everywhere when she was on SMA formula, so I tried cow and gate and it stopped completely. She still had a little sick every do often, but nothing compared to before. Could it be worth trying a different formula? x x

Be warned - I did what the doc said and left it. Ella then got so bad, and lost so much weight, that she has now been admitted into hospital!

If you don't feel like something is right, take it into your own hands and go back to see the docs before the week ... It's not fair on the little ones otherwise!

All I have to say is wow I really like my HV :)

As per usual Riven was perfectly well behaved whilst she was here lol, even after we fed him he didn't up chuck, but she still said she believed us, luckily he hasn't lost any weight since last weigh in 6 days ago, but he also hasn't put on.

She has advised us to keep bottle feeding with 60 ml to start and if he keeps that down to up the amount gradually, she also mentioned worst case scenarios of what it could be but that she would refer us to a paediatrician before we got to that point, she said if he had thrown up today when she saw him she would have referred him straight away but as he didn't and hasn't yet then if he is still being sick next week when she comes then she will refer him then.

She is also sending us for a blood test next week for prolonged jaundice, he is not as bad as he was and she is sure its just because he hasn't eaten a lot recently but she wants to double check and I just want him to be safe and happy.

She did a hearing test and he slept through it but all is ok and his synapses are all firing on the right cylinders yay him.

So yes it was all positive stuff which I wasn't expecting at all and she made me feel really positive that he will get sorted.

I will be ignoring the doctor and if he gets worse, he is being weighed again on Friday and if he has lost I will be going straight back to the doctors, the HV said to let her know the weight as well and if need be will speak to the doctor :)

Thanks for the advice ladies x x x

Glad she made you feel better. My breast fed baby is a very VERY sicky baby I sometimes feel like I should just go about naked and sponge myself off. Thank god both our babies are still gaining weight. Hope it gets better for you so you get more sleep xxx
