Has anyone worked in a residential home for older people before?

I have two job interviews lined up: one tomorow for a residential home care assistant, and another for casual staff at a day nursery.

I've worked in a children's nursery before, however, I've never worked in a residential home. Does anyone know what it's like to work in one? I love the idea of working with older people as much as I do working with young children, but I don't know if I'm strong enough to not get attached to the residents!

Any information I'm grateful for!! :)

It's hard work love I worked with people who had dementia also which is double the troubl

It's very sad to see them there tbh if your close to your grandparents it makes you really appreciate them lots

A general day for me was to get my patients up and out of bed washed dressed and down for breakfast. Then much cleaning of rooms.. Soiled clothes.. Accidents etc

It's very rewarding as sometimes they don't gt many visitors so you really do make a difference

Unfortunately death is part of the parcel and you will see people pass away or come to work and your one patient down and it's so so sad as you care for these people day in day out

You just gotta remember you made them comfortable in their time their and hold on to that

Is it a residential home or nursing home?

Residential care isnt as full on as nursing care, as they have to have an element of independence.

Nursing care is much more full on and pretty much providing all aspects of care for residents.

A typical day for me was:

-Handover before being paired up with another member of staff

-Going and collecting any bits and pieces ie towels, pads, etc

-Start to help residents up- some just providing assistance, others giving a full bed bath, dressing etc.

-Once all residents who are able to get up are ready, help feed those who cant themselves

-Help those who want to go back to their room

-15 min break

-Help residents to the loo, either walkibg or using a hoist

-Help serve lunch and feed those who need it

-Help residents who need to go back to their rooms to lay on their bed to protect pressure areas

-Help patients to the toilet

-General activities ie dominoes, offering hand massages or looking at photos etc
