Had a 4D scan today

Guest
Well, technically, it was yesterday as it's now after 3am and I still can't sleep because I'm so excited :D

I just wanted a check on the baby's growth and development, but the consultant put on the 3D images anyway and it was amazing. Although I'm not quite 28 weeks yet, he estimated the baby's weight to be 4lbs already! He said that could be 10% out, either way, but still - it's double the weight in the books I've read  My bump is much bigger this time around though. I hope it's just a big baby and not the sign of anything untoward. The gestational age from the other measurements was 30 wks +5 days (3 weeks ahead of what I should be), but they tell you to stick with the earlier scan for your due date...

The baby looked adorable and my other children were able to come and have a look, which was lovely. I'm really excited now and looking forward to the birth.

Aww those 4D scans are soooo cool I wish I had one done but it's a bit late now, she'll be here in 2 weeks!
It must be amazing to be able to see what they look like properly.
So you have a big baby then lol aww at least your little munchkin is healthy and happy in there

Glad you enjoyed the scan, wicked arn't they loved our one, wow that is big iwhen i had mine at 29 weeks they said baby was about 2lb 5 oz ... fingers crossed your baby will slow down, but Vickyleigh said at least baby is happy and healthy in there :D

thats great! :D i really want to have one but how much are they??

What a lovely pic. I keep telling my DH that we really need one, but at the moment he says no and that he thinks you can see too much of how they look etc that it will take the suprise away from when its born. What do you think?

 Aw Wendy
Your baby looks so very beautiful, the photo is very clear, i can hardly believe the weight though! ! 4lbs give or take a tad...wow! ! ! Whats you gut instinct? do you think your dates might be wrong? Baby certainly looks contented :cheer: looks like you might overtake me by 3 full weeks buddy? ? ? What are the next steps for you? how will you know if the dates are out?

You know Wendy every time I read one of your posts i change my mind about getting a 4D scan..... I want one.... I don't...... I do.....last time I was worried about my reaction to finding out the sex...... now i want to see if my baby looks as happy and healthy and as big as yours.. :D

But Really , Congratulations on a fantastic scan, pleased your children got involved too....... oh yes one more thing.......

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUDDY* XOXO

Littlepip, mine cost £200 (VERY expensive), but you can get them from around £120. Mine wasn't just a "bonding" scan, which is offered by companies such as 'Babybond'. Mine was with a proper consultant obstetrician at Nuffield in Glasgow and was to check the growth/progress of the baby, where the placenta is etc. I have opted for a homebirth and wanted reassurance that everything is okay (or as okay as it can be at this stage).

The trouble is, this baby prefers lying across my stomach - the worst possible position! It's still early, especially for a 3rd pregnancy, so has plenty of time to move head down, but I just hope it does.

Yvonne, that scan was fantastic. Nothing like that quick, "in-out" job at baby scan on Ingram St. I like Nuffield. They're proper doctors and go through everything with you. They take plenty of time with you and it feels more special.

I've read that you should go with the earlier scan dates if the dates change later. I had a dating scan at 9 weeks and one at 13 weeks and both were fine and in accordance with my LMP, though the baby has gone a bit ahead with each scan, e.g. at 13 weeks, it was + a few days and, even at the sexing scan, the sonographer said it was a "big" baby just by the feet and head, I think  I should look at my other posts - was I ahead at the 20 week anomaly scan too?

I can't understand it. My other kids were small-average for 39 weeks (7lbs 1oz and 6lbs 13oz). How can this baby be 4lbs at 27-28weeks? My partner isn't tall. I have an appointment with my m/w on Thursday, so I'll ask her. In some of the stuff I read, there is a 3 week differential on biochemistry measurements of the fetus later in 3rd tri. Mine is at the upper end, bang on being 3 weeks ahead (but before 28 weeks). I'm not sure if that signifies a problem? Diabetes comes to mind, but I've been clear till now and that wouldn't explain why the head is also measuring 30 wks +5 days.

I was keeping tack of my menstrual cycles, so I think the original due date is correct, so if the scans are right, then the baby is going to be big, not born earlier than I first thought. I'm just worried about getting it out! No, I'm not even going to think about it for now. I will only worry myself. Till now, I've been thinking that everyone else must have it wrong (everyone who's commented on how big I am this time around and the sonographers). Now, I'm beginning to wonder...ach, it'll probably only be about 7lbs 6 oz.

Loving the pics of your LO WendyWandy  I remember when we went for Isaac's at 30wks, AMAZING!! He spent the whole time trying to suck his thumb
Must have been exciting for your other children going to see the LO too :)
Wouldn't worry too much about the weight estimate, no-one knows until LO's born how much they weigh, I'm sure it's a growth spurt and baby will be back on their own track to being a bouncy, healthy, normal weight
Happy Belated Birthday wishes too

 Wendy, looked at your other 4D pictures there too... they are really great..... I like the fact you got the growth scan with a OB GYN... seems so much more worth the money, not to mention reassurances.

I think your just going to have a bigger baby this time too.... My second boy weighed 9lbs 2 oz....... people say big babies are easier to have..... well... I didn't have too much of a problem delivering him..... no pain relief either and just 3 big pushes... nice and quick.

Have a look at what the 'pampers pregnancy calender' says for week 29, below;
***
Temperature control. "How does it stay so warm in here?" This week marks an important milestone in your baby's brain development: the brain has matured to the point where it can help regulate body temperature. Of course, your little one isn't ready to do it all on her own yet; she still needs the warmth of your body to keep her toasty until birth. She also continues to develop nerve cells in her brain. By the time she's born, she'll have hundreds of billions of them. That seems like a lot, but she needs to stock up, since she won't produce any more after birth.

Puttin' on padding. Your baby is looking more like a full-term baby, too. She's plumping up nicely; the surface of her skin is smoother and paler because of the fat she's starting to gain. This fat will be an important factor in her ability to keep warm. Your baby also has eyelashes; she may be batting them at you right now!

Measuring up. Despite the increase in fat, your little one is still pretty thin-only about 2 to 3 percent of her 1.2 Kg (about 3 pounds) is made up of fat. Crown to rump, she measures 26 cm (about10 inches), but if you stretched her out, she'd be more than 40 cm (about 16 inches) long. ***

so if your just a little above average..... for them!! then maybe you shouldn't worry about GD..... I am sure your far to healthy for that
Good luck with the MW app.

Wink

p.s. does the family know what your having yet?

Yvonne,

what a lifesaver!! You just reminded me that I have a m/w appointment tomorrow :D I'd forget my head right now...I've written it on my hand in permanent marker, so hopefully, I won't forget (will probably take days to wash off).

My kids start back school tomorrow, so the last few days have been a bit hectic. Yes, if the baby should be around 3lbs at 29 weeks then 4lbs at 27wks+ isn't too much over, is it? I'm going on Redshoes' philosophy: no-one knows what baby will weigh till s/he is here. And if you delivered a 9lb+ baby (as you're only tiny) with no problems, then hopefully, I should be okay too, so thanks for that.

No, my family don't know a thing, though I must've let it slip a few hundred times by now :D I even asked at the scan that the consultant confirm the sex before I took my kids in, which he did. Luckily, it was the same as at the sexing scan, so no room for doubt now and I'm really excited. It'll be nearly Christmas by the time we have our babies - well only a month before, which I think will be so special.

I really don't know what's "wrong" with me these days - must be all the hormones and vitamin group B I'm taking - but I feel so happy and content with life. :D Really unlike me (old cynic that I am)!

Thanks too, Redshoes. I can't believe that you have Isaac already (it seems like only yesterday that you were pregnant too). You'll be such an experienced mum now! Though how you still find the time to come one here, I don't know. I'm impressed with all you new mums who manage that.
