i got a letter this morning saying i'd missed a gluscose tolerence test yesterday, even though i had no idea i had an appointment! and they've re-scheduled it for the 11th. they told me that you have to be 28 weeks pregnant in the letter, but by the 11th i'll be 29 & a half! does it matter?
what should i expect to happen? i really can't be arsed with sitting about in the hospital for two hours. it's a good job i'm reading a good book!

I've got my GTT on monday. they take your blood and make you swallow some sugary liquid. i'm not too keen about staying 2 hours either and not being able to eat from the night before, hope that doesnt make me feel sick :(

I'm not sure if every pregnant woman is supposed to have one. I've got a history of diabetes in the family so i'm assuming that's the reason theyve booked me in for one.

After monday i'll be able to give you the details of exactly what it involves.

Hiya  Your in preston like me, at rph you sit in the room opposite the scan department. You are not allowed anything to eat the night before from about 8ish i think, you are allowed water thats it. You go in the morning they take your blood reading, make you drink the sugary solution you have to wait for half an hour then they take your blood reading again (sugar level). If theres a problem they let you no, if its fine they let you go. I recommend you take loads of magazines while you wait and a massive butty when you have finished there cause when you havent eat for about 12 hours its starvation :rotfl:

Had my GTT today and yep thats exactly what happens. Except instead of half an hour i had to wait 2 hours before the second blood test. Used that time to hav a kip in the car. Allso, the nurse said the results should reach my MW in a week and she would only contact me if there was something wrong. I second taking in loadsa food and that book you're reading.

i was reading an article on these tests, and how they're useless. doctors don't really know how to treat gestational diabetes, and usually just end up pushing you for a c-section as your baby might be bigger.

any opinions on this?

That's the first i've heard of this. Mind you i havent done any research at all so i wouldnt know. Gest diabetes is quite rare though. Chances are you don't have it.

Blah Ive got mine next week. I was talking to one of midwives when I popped up to maternity ward for some equipment the other night, and she said not to bother going! You can refuse, and its a complete waste of time. Shes pregnant and she said shes gonna refuse it!

I was gonna ask the diabetic consultant at work ( I work on diabetes specialist ward) if I should bother, because although midwives say you will tell from your symptoms..a lot of diabetes sympoms are EXACTLY the same as pregnancy ones

Now Im just gonna go in and get it over with..it wont cause any harm

I went for mine because on booking I was the BMI before fat (whatever that is) on booking in, my MW was crazy they had referred me (was my consultant who insisted) I went on to loose over 2 stone due to MS too!

I had the test (killer not being able to drink gaviscon whilst fasting and then until after the 2nd bloods) and they lost the results and my consultant was very flippant just saying never mind that was a waste of time  You dont say!!!
