Hi Guys

I know this might seem a rude question to ask but here goes...

Are all the ladies that are being tested for GTT overweight or are there women that are what they class as "normal" having this too?

I saw a pratt from the hospital who completely made me feel like a enormous pig  and my husband was livid. Even my husband was distressed and said "this is supposed to be the most enjoyable time of your life expecting a child" but even he is disgusted and he works for the NHS!"

He was asking do I eat loads of chocolate, sugary drinks, fish and chips etc... Im not no angel but I dont purposely eat crap all day.. i have our son to consider and he has 3 rounded meals aday along with fresh fruit and veg and smoothies.. "i think there is a stigma attached as I live on estate and we all are bad parents" sorry but this guy is a complete t**ser* and a complaint has been made and I have warned my midwife that if I am entitled to me elective c he is not to be near me or I will shove the epidural needle up his a**e.

I spoke to my midwife about this and she said that he should not have jumped to conclusions like that until they had my GTT results in front of them.

I am 5ft 1" tall and my booking in weight was 13st 8lb i was weighed last wednesday just coming 23 weeks and weighed 14st 1lb so only put on 9lb. I have been told my baby is BIFF (love this word) but then my husband stands 6ft 6" so its all legs and body with this one exactley the same as I carried my son.

Sorry to rattle on but i gey so annoyed when anyone gets treated badly.

Take care all and thanks in advance for any responses

I wouldn't even say you were that big to be honest with you...... I'm 5ft 4 and before I was pregnant I weighed in at just over 14 and half stone and although I'm quite a bit overweight there's people who are a lot worse than me!!

If I was you I would have slapped that man in the face....what an ignorant arse he sounds!

Can't help much with you testing question though....what's GTT tests anyway?? As I've said, I'm overweight and not's something that's been mentioned to me yet at all!

 Kathy that is poop.

I have a GTT because Im on the BMI score before overweight! Im not sure what my weight is but MW was appauled that I had been considered on this basis. What is worse is that I lost around 2 dress sizes in 1st tri from sickness and starvation and he used my booking in weights!!

Im not making a fuss as I dont mind having the test and they suspect something may be going on which could lead to diabeties as I keep blacking out, but my MW has complained.

Good on you for complaining!

They give everyone who is overweight the GTT test. Don't see it as an insult, but you are more at risk of gestational diabetes if your BMI is over a certain level. Most people are fine. Don't feel like you're being singled out, it's normal for people who have higher BMI's.

However - i'd be very insulted at what they said to you! They shouldn't make you feel bad for being overweight and pregnant, like you said, you should just be able to enjoy this time.

Bless your heart!

Thanks for your support guys... it nice to know im not alone and really angry that other people seem to get treated in a similar way.

I am fully aware of why i should be having the GTT for the risk of Gestational Diabetes but i dont like having assumptions laid at my door.

What makes me giggle most is that im a a very similar boat to aramintalovegrove -- i weighed 16st 8lb at booking in weight with my son and was NOT offered GTT so why the big fuss this time :rotfl:

Well im just glad i dont have a needle phobia as you get pricked quite alot so i have been informed by my husband!

Thanks again ladies
Take care

He sounds like a complete dick wad but i think you knew this already ;)

His opinion to me sounds one which is ignorant and quite tactless personally... im glad you're making a formal complaint!!! not saying you do however even if you did eat chocolate, fish and chips all the time it would be more professional for him to guide a better direction rather then being a jobs worth soapboxing.

I have to have a GTT test aswell, because my baby is measuring bigger for his weeks. I was overweight upon becoming pregnant.

Weight CAN be a contributor to GD HOWEVER there are plenty of women who are of a normal weight or underweight so its all dependant...

Please also remember that not everyone in the medical field knows everything, take everything with a pinch of salt I say...

Alot of women also have this test and the result comes back negative.

x

Hi sharne

Thanks for that.. i am really hoping its NEGATIVE.. then im personally going to find this idiot and ask him does he need an "positive attitude implant" but i doubt the NHS could find one large enough to fit the arrogant part of him speaking to women like that :rotfl:

And thanks for the point that this test is not for overweight women.. which is very reassuring for us all.

Take care

i have to have GTT too, i am not 'overweight' i was told to have it for hereditary reasons, the mw said she thinks its a waste of time!
try not to worry about what was said- is there any other reason theyve suggested u haveit

I was just called this morning to book my GTT I have to have it because all my siblings have type 1 diabetes so I am considered high risk Im not over weight I am sure there are lots of people who arn't over weight who get gestational diabetes and plenty of people abit over weight who don't he had no right to make you feel uncomfortable in that way!!

I completly forgot to mention that another reason as gerb and penstraze pointed out for the test is if your parents have it.

Both of my folkes have type 2...

Yeh, my mum has type 2 and I'm pretty sure they mentioned that to me too.

I have to get my anti D injection on the same day so I'm just happy I get a morning of work :D
