Hi - ive never posted on here before but have 'lurked' alot!

Anyway i am due on the 10th September and both my younger sisters have already had children. I am pretty terrified of labour and birth and have a very open mind when it comes to using pain relief - but ive had loads of discussions with my sisters and my mum who all say using pain relief is 'cheating'! :wall2:

I know this is a load of old rubbish but its making me feel so depressed as they will automatically see me as a failure or weak if i do have to have any pain relief and ill never hear the end of it. Apparently ill be 'letting the side down'. I have already tried the tack of 'would you have a tooth out with an anaesthetic?' but they all state that this is completely different.

Sorry - Theres no real point to this thread but ive just had another of these debates with my mum and its made me feel really really sad and a failure already plus an enormous amount of pressure to go through labour and birth 'naturally' even if it is excruciating.

Thanks for listening!

the way i see it is every body handles things differently and if they cant exsept that you might need a bit of help then they need to get over them selves a little

you have whatever you feel you need hun dont compare yourself to how other ppl cope.

im terrible n need everything lol, gas and air is excellent and can get you most of the way, pethadine is also good but if you have it when your quite far into labour it apparently makes the baby sleepy so if you plan to breast feed it will be too tired.

like i say, dont listen to what anyone says you knowyour body and what you can handle, if you find yourself coping try without but if you struggle and need pain relief you are not a wimp, coward , chicken or anything you are just like billions of other women xx

tell them to go f*** chick..x

thats really bad you dont know how your labour is going to go, your body might cope well or might not. i had an epidural with my first and gas and air with my second. complete didnt labours x x

how differnt is labour second time round is it easier and quicker?

Eugh, it's so annoying when people try and make you feel bad about pain relief! Every person is different, they have different pain thresholds... But most of all, every pregnancy is different! Some women (as has been said above) can have one labour where they have serious pain relief, and then another with hardly any. It all depends what happens on the day.

I know what you mean though, my mum had no pain relief with my older brother and only gas and air with me, she says she "shells them like peas" and that I'll be the same. I want to have LO at the local birthing centre, but I'm slightly worried about the pain relief situation, and mum tells me to stop being so melodramatic!

I just told her to mind her own business! I suggest you do the same with your family. It's such a pain when others think they know what's best for you! At the end of the day, you know yourself, and if you want to keep an open mind then so be it, after all, you might not need any pain relief! But if you do, you're definitely not "letting the side down" !!!!!

xx

Thanks for all your replies everyone! You have all made me feel alot better. I know its a load of old balls but sometimes it just gets to me when im feeling a bit low...

Thanks everyone!

Sod them. YOU are having this baby. Not them! If you think you will have a happier & easier pregnancy with all the pain relief in the world then you go for it! x
