Hi all - just thought I'd give some encouragement to new mums who are finding it hard to breastfeed. Dylan was in ITU for the first 5 days and was fed EBM through a drip so when I finally started to breastfeed him he just wasn't taking to it so I had to keep topping him up with cup feeds of expressed milk. He had lost loads of weight (7lb 12 to 6lb 8) so they weren't going to allow me to go home but I persuaded them to and for the first week or two I found it really hard because I just didn't know how much he was taking from me. When the MW came he had only put on one ounce then after 2 days another 2 ounces and I felt like he had been eating gallons of milk. I stopped giving him the top ups and just made sure that he was latched on properly and let him feed as often as he wanted, for as long as he wanted and I also made sure he didn't go more than 3 hours without a feed. He's now eating really well and the HV was here today and he now weighs 7lb 3 oz so he's doing really well.
As usual, I've typed loads but it's just to say that eventually you find a way that suits you and you make the right amount of milk for your baby. I felt that I really had to suceed at the breast feeding because of the way the birth went and it was really everything that I didn't want so I'm happy that I have managed the feeding part xx
