How many gold fish are you allowed in a 10ltr tank?

I have bought a tank for Arianna's birthday and have it set up so the water conditions first etc and am hoping to get the fish tomorrow or Saturday....

Ideally I want to get her 3 (one big and 2 smaller), but everything a see says prob best just 2.

Surely one more wont make a difference

Any advice as I dont want to get too many and end up killing them all in the first week!

We always had odd numbers of fish because apparently it's more feng sui to have an even number of gold ones and then one black one.

My mam was a bit of a feng sui nutcase at one point lol

10 litres? far too small for a goldfish.. you need more like 10 gallons for just 1 fish..

Just what I was about to say! I always had an uneven number of fish in the tank.

Three should be fine for that size of tank. Remember that they'll grow. I had one goldfish that grew sooooo big I had to give him to a pal to put in his pond (he's now 10 inches long!).

If you want easy too look after hardy fish go for the traditional goldfish, or any of the ones with goldfish shapped bodies. The more their shape deviates from the "normal" the more problems they can have.

Shubunkins are good to, and add a bit of colour! Beware of the Orfe!! They are the most suicidal creatures I have ever come across. They are so hyper that they will jump out of the tank. I won't go into details about what happened to one of mine. Lets just say the dog didn't need any dinner that particular day!

Well that size would be ok for a while but they grow pretty quickly and it will soon need a bigger home..

If you could buy a little heater there are some nice tropical fish that could thrive in that tank size?

Goldfish are very very messy fish and produce alot of amonia which is extremely harmful to fish so if you keep a goldfish in a small environment, you will have to do water changes every single week to keep it clean.

Thats why people think goldfish don't live long when actually they are supposed to live longer then 10 years!! Alot longer than most fish.

Also, people think goldfish are "easy" starter fish, but really they need huge living space to grow. They only grow to the size of their environment and if kept in a small tank, they can't grow and thrive which means a short life span. When you put a tiny goldfish into a pond, it grows really really big - thats the environment they are supposed to be in.

Sorry if I seem pushy, im just really passionate about fish and I think fish bowls shouldn't be sold in pet shops

Goldfish are very dirty fish and require alot of water to provide enough oxygen. I have a 60 lite tank for my two, they have had babies and ive kept 3 of them so ill prob need a bigger tank soon. I have a filter and chammge my water once a week.

We used to have tropical fish, but I thought goldfish would be easier to look after....

Hmmmm.... maybe not?!?!

you're being a tad patronising. I know how long goldfish can live - I had one live for 11 years (until he died because an elderly lady fed him sleeping tablets).

I've had goldfish since I was 2.

Why do you assume that doing water changes every week would be such a huge deal?

Obviously you have to put them in a bigger tank when they start getting bigger - that's only logical...you wouldn't put a 12 year old in a moses basket.

But to start with they will be probably very small.

oh heck.... didnt mean to start anything!!! Was only asking

I hope i dont sound patronising, im just speaking from experience, i had my 2 in a small tank when i got them with no filter or anything and they got ill. Been much happier in larger tank.

Obviously you can start them in a smaller tank, but it might be false economy if you have to move them.

It would save alot of cleaning / heart ache if you got tropical fish instead. The only fish that I can think of for a small heated tank is a fighting fish. They are great fish to keep (I have 2), they flare up when they look in the mirror to scare the fish away - would be fun for her :D

Only get 1 though cos they fight..

yes they do prefer more space it's true

but Sarah already has bought the tank....so she's got no choice but to start with a small one.

It will be fine for a while whilst the fish is small.

You were being patronising though. I wasn't being ignorant in what I was saying about the water, yet you assumed that I was.

And by the way there's no need to roll your eyes at me.

I didn't mention your comments at all, I just answered her question - it was you who questioned my answer and then I replied to you. You were the one asking about it so I responded - its nto my fault if you thought I was treating you like you didn't know - Not everyone knows about goldfish for goodness sake..

Dya know what this is ridiculous.
If you didn't mean to be patronising then fine. I DID feel that you were treating me like an idiot (which I'm not) and it did irk me.

Just forget it. I don't want to get into an argument over flipping goldfish!

it's been set up for 4days now.

Now I am thinking tho as we still have our globe in the garage?!?!?

****************

Can I also just say that all the advice has been helpful.... please dont fall out over my silly blonde question - it is only me who is clueless!! :)
