You know when some of you have gotten put back or forward at your scans? Does that mean you didn't OV when you thought you had? Just curious really as we put all our efforts into BDing when we think we are OVing but then see that some of you get your dates changed. Does that mean we don't always OV when we think we do?

I think its more to do with your cycle length. If you have a longer cycle, say 35 days, when you miss your AF then you will be dated at 5 weeks pregnant, and not the traditional 4 (cos your cycle is 1 week longer than a typical 28 day cycle). Then when you go for your scan, they put you back a week as the time from fertilization to missing AF is still only around 2 weeks (doesn't tend to vary as much as post ov. bit of cycle).

Hope this makes sense!!

I got put back a week cause I was counting my pregnancy from the first day of my last AF, that lasted a week so I obv wasn't pregnant then.

I thought that was how they did calculate it generally.. my midwife asked me this question at first, and also alot of online calculators tell you to enter the first day of your lmp??? Its all terribly confusing.

I know, it's stupid, because your obviously not PG on the first day of your last period! But then, thinking about it, some girls get put forward by a day or two even though they have counted it from the first day of last AF. G3M and I got our BFPs the same day, but I remember reading she tested before AF was due and I tested when AF was a few days late, but she's ahead of me by a few days, lol. (I might have misread!) It may be to do with you OV date. But I really don't get it!

It can depend on when you ovulated but it can also depend when implantation occured, this can change the size of bubs on the dating scan therefore change your dates.

Hope that makes it a bit clearer?

the sonoghrapher explained to me that they use a text book idea that a baby will measure a certain amount each day, but obviously some babies grow a little faster or slower at times, but they dont take this into account and just change EDD.

if you know certain what your dates are, i would go by them, when my mum was pregnant my dad was in the army and came home for 1 weekend which is when she conceived but the hospital kept telling she was wrong as baby measured different by as much as 2 weeks :rotfl:

I still dont get it.. as you cannot possibly ovulate during AF, so conceiving during your AF is also impossible? I thought normal ovulation was 14 days after AF, (or longer for some cycles) so why bother still calculating anything from 1st day of AF. It just makes NO SENSE LOL, pls correct me if im wrong..

Eternally confused

OK when you concieve (have sex and make a baby lol) your baby is already classed as 2 weeks old... dont ask me why but this is the way that it is worked out. For example 2 weeks after you concieve you will be 4 weeks pregnant so thats why they go from your last period.

Does that make more sense?

I kinda know what you guys mean now! Like Paradysso said, I go by the dates they gave me in my scan obviously because they know what the baby looks like at each stage. Being put back a week is disappointing, but theres nothing i can do about it!

It makes sense that it doesn't make sense lol If they knock 2 weeks off they might just be a bit more accurate then?

know idea why they do , they just do lol think before u have a scan they wil go buy your last lmp , and for peeps like me who had a spot on 28 cycle and ovulate on day 13 or 14 my edd was spot on within a day !

babycentre says this

While the estimated day of conception is literally the day you first became pregnant, most practitioners don't count pregnancy from that date because there's no way to know for sure when you really did ovulate and conceive. So they take the easier route and go back to the first day of your last menstrual period. Then they count 40 weeks from that day to find your due date.

so its just to make it easy lol
