My newborn has had terrible wind the last 2 days....her poor tummy is really swolen and she's not really passing gas, but i can hear it in her stomach. I think its from something a friend cooked for us (some kind of soup i now realise to be onion based)

Well....since then she's not sleeping well and has only soiled her nappy 2 times in a 24hour period......before this she was going after almost every feed. Could the gas be causing her not to poop?
Should i call the doctor about this? We're already using the infacol drops before feeds, but i dont know if its even doing anything.

Am I right in thinking that you gave your newborn the Onion Soup???????

now that would make me a totall idiot!!! no i didnt give my 10 day old baby onion soup hahaha

i ate it.....and i was reading how food the mother eats can affect her breast milk and therefor upset baby.

Sorry to say but it sounds like colic...my Lo started with it at around 2 weeks....she was really bloated and would suffer terrible with gas on and off all day and night. It gradually got better and now she's 12 weeks she doesn't have it much and it doesn't make her cry. It's usually to do with their digestive system being immature.
As for the poos...it sounds fine. Brestfed babies can go days without concern, from what I've heard it's normal, so don't worry hun...maybe just mention it to your HV if you are concerned still.

How is she doing wind wise? Is she burping much up? I'd wind her regularly after feeds and if she pulls of your boob then wind her during it. But don't take her off unless she comes off (if you are BF'ing). Tryin winding in different positions and see what happens. Also circular movement on her back can help.

FWIW newborn babies tummies do make an awful din. Lots of gurgling and so on. Its because their gut has not matured and it will do so gradually over the next 10-12 weeks. So expect lots of that noise during and after feeding (and sometimes beyond that).

Also if she is not in discomfort (ir pulling her legs up or kicking them a lot) or crying I'd not worry overly.

If she needs to break wind then you can help by lifting her legs gently up and over her body and repeating. Or having her push her feet into the palms of your hands. Give her something to push against.

Also remember that babies (breastfed ones) can go days between poos. It is quite normal. My LO pooed a lot to start, then went to 1-2 a day, then to pooing once or twice every 3-4 days, then back to 6 poos a day. He's not pooed now for about 4 days. If you are having wet nappies thats the main thing atm.

It could well be the onion that has passed through to your milk hun. Try massaging her belly and a warm bath and see how she goes. Some infacol might help. I know how gassy onion can make you so if it has passed through your milk, she could have been affected by it. xxxxxx

LOL @ Foxxi thinking you gave her soup!!!! Wally!!!!!!
