For those of you who've had ultrasonds at around 9 weeks

Hi all,

I've got my first scan this friday but I have a few questions.

Is it likely to be transvaginal or abdominal?

And secondly, do you think I need to go with a full bladder or not?

They've not really given me much information and what they have said is a bit vague so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey KJ,

My scan last week was abdominal so i can't see that yours would be transvaginal. I was told to go with a full bladder, and my next scan is at 10 weeks (have no idea why) and again that will be abdominal and they have asked me to go with a full bladder. They reccommend drinking one to two pints of water before you go.

Hiya,

I had a scan at 7 weeks and they could see everything abdomibally. I was told to have a full bladder as it pushes out the uterus.

But if they can't see much they may ask you if you are ok with an internal scan.

You prob won't need one but it's best to bear it in mind. I have had an internal one before and it wasn't that bad.

I can't go more that an hour without wanting to wee drinking a glass of water, If I drank 2 pints before I went I would pee myself on the bus!

Yeah two pints is a bit hefty!

I had scans at 7 and 11 and 14 weeks and nearly wee'd myself at all of them!

I would just make sure you have had a drink around half hour before hand and take a bottle of water with you to sip on the way if necessary.

On one of mine i was in agony so had to wee before i went for my scan. But i had drunk so much by the time i was on the table my bladder was full again! And i wee'd anopther 3 times before leaving the hospital!

I had one at 7 weeks as was told didn't need to drink any water - and it was abdominal. I had one at 11+5 weeks and was told to drink 1.5 ltrs of water and when I got in there they said my bladder was too full.

I would have peed on them if they had told me to drink all that water then said my bladder was too full.

Hi KJ,

I have had one scan at 12 wks 3 days and was told that my bladder was TOO full so had to go and empty it in order for the scanner to measure something on the baby! So don't go overboard.

I'm fairly sure your scan will be abdominal, transvaginal are normally for very very early pregnancy, pre 6 weeks as far as I know. Also, I would imagine you do need to go with a full bladder (but not too full as above!) as pre 13 weeks, the uterus is hidden behind the pelvis so they need the full bladder to push the uterus up - in later scans this is not so much of a problem.

Both my scans so far, 6w and 8w5d were internal
Bloody hurt too oh and its a empty bladder for internal and full bladder for external,

Hi everyone,

thanks for all your replies. That's what I thought really. When I booked it I asked if I needed a full bladder and the lady on the phone said no!!

I'm going to phone again before friday to check but I think I'll go with a full bladder anyway and then I'll just go to the loo if it's not needed!

Had my first @ 8 weeks 2days..went with full bladder but if you dont want to be uncomfy, take bottle of water and drink it when you are waiting for scan, or our hozzie had a water machine with cups in the waiting room. Hope this helps and good luck, its magical seing bubba for first time, I couldnt believe my eyesxx
