ruben has always favoured his right side and always sleeps with his head to the right no matter what i do. in norway where i am from people always use pillows for their babies from a young age, but here the HV's scare the s**t pit of you saying about SIDS etc. well, i've left him without a pillow so far, but now i've noticed a significant flat spot on his head i went ahead and got a baby pillow. i was happy to see they had included research from sweden which proves if used correctly there is no increased risk of SIDS - in fact the swedish dept of health recommends the use of a baby pillow, to prevent flat spots, and sweden still has one of the lowest rates of SIDS in the world so it can't be as bad as they say!

You can inform your health visitor that many leading hospitals such as the Portland Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hosp and Chelsea Westminster Hosp - just to mention three in London are among those now recommending our baby pillows to their patients and newborn, and have been impressed with the results! Not just as treatment to plagiocephaly but also as prevention.
I know many NHS health visitors around the UK are negative to baby pillows just because that is the way it has been for so long now and it is the UK Dept of Health's current guideline. We have sent all the documentation to the UK Dept of Health urging them to to revise the guidelines in line with Sweden'. For the past 6 years in Sweden baby pillows have proven very successfull in reducing the number of babies with plagiocpehaly, whilst maintaining the world's 3rd lowest rate of cot deaths - with figures nearly half that of the UK's!
It is such a shame that not more GP's and Health Visitors understand how common flattening of the head is and what to do about it and that it does not always correct itself but need help. The above mentioned hospitals are also frustrated with the lack of information on the condition and the UK's approach to treatment rather than prevention.
I am Swedish and went through the whole UK process for my daughter's plagiocephaly two years ago and found very limited help in this country.
Just remember to always put your baby down on its back with head and shoulders positioned on the pillow.
Best regards
Anna
