I've been wondering about this for a while - in Germany apparently it's possible to register the father of a child even before it's born in order to clarify the legal situation in case of unmarried couples. Does anything similar exist over here, or is it basically all open until the birth certificate is there?

One of the reasons I'm asking is, what happens if anything happened to me before the child is born or during child birth? Would my bloke still be able to get all parental rights/responsibilities or how would it be handled legally?

Hope this helps.

If the child’s mother dies and it would be best for the child to live with you, you’ll need to apply to the courts for PR – which is stressful and time consuming at a time when you’ll least be able to cope with it

If your partner is the child father hun he has the same rights as you now as the law changed in 2003 i think it was (might be wrong with the year) giving fathers the same rights as mothers so i wouldnt worry

Thanks for the answers, according to my googling they still apply only if the birth is registered jointly, but there seems to be no provision if the mother is not surviving the birth.

(I do fully intend to survive giving birth and generally hope I'll happily live to old age, btw, just want to be prepared and not leave my partner in a messy situation should not everything go to plan)

I spoke to a solicitor about this last week and he told me I didn't need to do anything about the baby as OH would automatically have PR when he was born (yes law changed 2003) and would automatically have residency of baby.

With my older child from a previous relationship (his birth Dad died years ago) my solicitor is making me a will (or similar type document) which will make my OH his testementary guardian and give OH parental responsibility on event of my death. We had planned for OH to adopt my son anyways but never had enough time so this was the only other option. This is just in case any of my sisters say they want my eldest (we didn't want the kids seperated)

Hope that helps

Yeah as soon as he is on the birth certificate he is equal to a mother.
I googled that quote.
