Hiya Folks,

I go to see my midwife for my first appointment 2 weeks today and read in one of my books that it would be helpful for me to find out as much about mine and my husbands family medical history as possible before this appointment.

What type of thing relating to the family medical history will the midwife need to know and how far into the family will they want to know about? brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles, cousins, parents grandparents or the wider family too? Before asking my mother in law any nosey questions about people in the family i thought i better see what type of thing i needed to know first?

many thanks

Ive not got asked anything from my midwife the only bit she wanted to know was my own medical history not family or the outside just myself. i dont know why my midwife hasnt asked me about other family medicals i dunno lol.

Just speak to all your family and ask them even the inlaws because your baby is to do with the inlaws kinda lol. just ask them what there midical history background is because your midwife wants to know. Think mainly your mum and dads/ there mum and dad and inlaws side i dont think bro an sis count but then again i dont know much because my midwife didnt say anything to me lol.
sorry if im no help.

Hope you find some answers xx

thanks scaredmum2b i'm sure that my in laws will be fine with me asking them stuff i just thought it best to know what i should be asking.

hey theyll ask you bout all medical history... CHD, diabetes, prev. pregnancies , any miscarriages in pregs. diseases depression etc etc. anything you dont know can be changed or added later so if you would like to be 100% accurate bring pen and paper and note the stuff you arent sure of. they dont seem to focus too much if you dont know something they dont seem bothered even its just background info :D xx

i was asked if anyone in my family had previous problems with pregnancies or things like diabetes.
My sister suffers from epilepsy and the midwife took a note of it and told me she had to speak to someone who knew about genetics. Everything seems fine with it though.

I think its all to see what the likely hood of the baby getting anything passed on to them is and so they can get an idea of how your pregnancy will go. I don't really know how they do this!!
I had to go as far as mine and OH's grandparents.

Don't worry if you don't know all the info they need, it can always be added later if you find anything out. :)

Hope this has helped,
katiexx

thanks ladies, i know what to ask everyone now many thanks for your help xx
