posting 2 new threads at once in 'kids health' probably makes me a hyperchondriac but here goes...

morgan had some dry patches on his arms and legs which werent red and didnt seem to bother him but you could feel them like sandpaper when touched. the doc noticed them and prescribed some cream. well over the past few days its suddenly spread all over his back and theyre definate red patches of dry skin :(

Im thinking this could be allergic eczema and i reckon hes never really got on with dairy. does anyone have any experience with dairy allergy and how its managed? how woud you avoid giving your LO milk etc..?

Can't help with the daily allergy I'm afraid but I completely sympathise with the eczema! Emily is plagued with it and it's awful! Hope someone can offer some useful advice x

oh poor emily, :(

do you use creams then? im going to the gp with it tomorrow but he's a numpty and i want to be prepared

We have to go to the childrens hospital :-( she needs very potent steroid cream to keep it under control. Nothing the GP can prescribe is strong enough. I can't rule out an allergy, but because eczema runs in my family they won't test her.

Hope you get something to help, poor Morgan! X

hey josh had a cows milk allergy and has bad exzcma (sic). He has dirpo base cream that we have to use 3-4 times a day and oilatum junior for the bath. (prescribed) He also has nutramigen 1 with lipil milk which is lactose and Cows milk protein free. his ezcema is not perfect but if we keep up with creams etc then its fine.

If you think it is a cows milk allergy can you not cut it out of his food for a bit?? Apparently it can normally take 48 hours for it to be completely out hof their system so potentially you might have to be strict for a while! If it works dont let your HV fob you off with anything ele it could be. We had so many doctors etc telling us it was reflux that stopped J breathing but it was cos his stoimach swelled up and pushed on his lungs due a CMA. WHen i asked at the hosp the ytold me it was deffo not the case!! anyways,

let us know how you get on! PS, since changing milk and the cream his ezcsma is miles better. His skin was like leather it was so dry/tough! xxx

poor emily :( thats bad that they wont test, surely its better (and cheaper for them!) to identify and avoid a trigger than just treat the eczema.

morgans skini s generally quite soft but he has all these clearly defined patches where it is like leather/sandpaper. Id love to cut out dairy but I couldnt do it without docs cooperation cos i dont want to compromise his calcium levels. He was 3 weeks old when i first asked the doc if he could be lactose intollerant and he laughed at me and said no its impossible. Ive since found out it is possible

I think Im going to go in with a list of symptoms and insist that we trial 2 weeks dairy free.

yeah i asked if it was an allergy to milk and told it was impossible pfft - impossible my arse!! Ah well. if they decide to try it our HV just gave us a tub of milk to try. apparently its completely trial and error to see if its an allergy.

xxx GL xxx

That's awful you were told that!!!

Yeah. I knew it was - well had a big feeling - we have family history of it but they never bothered to ask that was when I stopped bfeeding n so he was on formula all the time and so obvs just got worse whilst in hosp and spent all days screaming but that was cos of reflux apparently. Entirely due to reflux. X.

madison has eczema, exactly what u described first circular dry patches that dont bother her, she has diprobase and oilatum! oilatum seems rubbish but im using it anyway and diprobase only gets put on her twice a day as thaqts when shes naked BUT its not bad enough to worry bout 4 times a day! lol i sound terrible! haha

i have only just started giving her lots of cows milk and on bottle of formula and i reckon her eczema started at the same time so u have raised suspicions in my head :/ lol xxx

Tegan is Lactose intolerant and whilst she was having Lactose her Eczema was terrible covered in dry patches everywhere. ever since she's been on Lactose free formula her Eczema has got so much better she also has otium bath additive and a cream hope you get some answers Hun xx

Zac had a bit of eczema, and suspected MPA, although I think he has grown out of it now. We got oilatum for the bath and oilatum cream, also hydrocortisone cream for bad areas and he is on a milk free formula called nutramigen. I got the cream from the Docs but was referred to a dietician who prescribed the formula. Good luck at the Docs x

Thanks for all your replies, it does seem there's a link in quite a few cases. My lo screamed and screamed and the only help we got was a prescription for infacol even though hevwas projectile vomiting after every feed. We put him on aptimil comfort which is reduced lactose then bought our own colief drops to get rid of more lactose and he was so much better. Took him back with this evidence and got told colief is too expensive to prescribe and just use infacol  he's still sicky but not as bad. We don't even have an official diagnosis of reflux.

We have a family history of food intollerances and allergies including lactose intollerance which is why I raised it with doc at a few weeks old. I really despair of my gp!

Thats horrible tiny! Sounds like they arent bothered! We get all our eczema stuff prescribed, milk prescribed and got colief prescribed as well!! Is there no one else you can talk to" x

Ps my HV said there is more often than not a link between allergies like cmp and lactose allergies that can lead to eczema! Apparently its a really strong link. And obviously if its a family thing then it increases the likelihood of your LO having it x

SOrry to hijack this a little bit but Freddie has got two red patches behind one of his knees, HV said likely to be eczema and prescribed diprobase cream. Since using it, it has got worse despite putting it on 5 times a day.

reading this thread made me think, I started Freddie on one bottle of formula a few weeks ago and have just upped this to 2 - trying to stop bf slowly - could it be this making his eczema worse - if he was lactose intolerant wouldn't this have meant he would have had probs with breast milk too cos I have loads of dairy in my diet. Also, wouldn't he have patches everywhere, not just localised??

Was thinking maybe the cream not good enough but don't really want to get him prescribed with a stronger one iykwim. Should I try switching formula?

if it is a lactose intolerancec/cows milk intolerance, try using colief or i believe there is a regula formula thats lower in lactose. apparently thats the first step. Colief breaks down the lactose in the milk which makes it easy to digest and sorts the prob out. The formula is just reduced lactose. If it continues then talk to your HV/Dr, however its very very difficult for them to diagnose any sort of intolerance. Potentially you could try a hydrolase (sic) based formula and see how that goes. But im not a dr/hv/medical professional etc and so dont want to be suggeting things. However, this is exaclty what our HV did. If you do do it, then make sure you are very much aware of every behaviour difference, nappies etc etc...........

I would also recommend aptamil comfort, the milk protein is more broken down and has 50% of the lactose than normal formula. I put zac on it before he got the nutramigen and it made a massive difference, zac only showed signs of his intolerance wen he was on 3 bottles of formula a day xxx

yeah WSS ^^ thats the milk i was trying to htink of!
