Anyone used a dummy from early on and still successfully breastfed?
My baby is 3 weeks old, fully breastfed and feeding for 2 hours at a time. I'm reluctant to introduce a dummy and know it's not recommended in 1st month but i'd be interested in your experiences. Thanks for reading x

Id avoid it if you possibly can...they do tend to get out of the comfort suck quite quick. The world becomes far more interesting than mums boob. All the time your LO is stimulating the supply and you dont have to bother with trying to get the dummy off them at a later date. Id say although it can be tough when they are sucking for a long time the best way to deal with it is distraction. Watch the tele go on pc read or something. They do become less attatched I promise lol. Welldone you x

hey hun,
i really didnt want to use a dummy but my LO was comfort sucking all the time, i was exhausted! my MW actually suggested it when my LO was 3 weeks old and i wish id have given it to jack sooner! he is 17 weeks and still breast feeding xxxxxx

I gave Rudy one at 2 weeks and continued to exclusivley breasfeed until 13 weeks, I found it made no difference.

DD wouldnt take a dummy at first but i think i tried again around 6 weeks and shes still bf now so although she was that little bit older i found it a godsend.

I've breastfed before so knew within two days that Henry was spending an awful lot of time comfort sucking on me which was making me red raw... i gave him a dummy on his second night having had him on the breast for hours and him crying everytime he fell off... he sucked it twice with an utter look of contentment on his face, closed his eyes and fell asleep (the dummy fell out after an hour :) )

i was still in hospital so i checked with the midwife the next morning who said i looked better for having a few hours kip and told me to stop doubting myself "you've done it before" she said... what a refreshing attitude

So we've been exclusively breastfeeding and he is 2 weeks and 2 days old. Yes he has a dummy but its only ever after a feed when I know he is wanting a comfort suck. I also give it to him to help him bring wind up and found it invaluable when he had the colicky day or two as his poo changed from meconium over to breastmilk poo's.

I think aslong as you are careful in it's use then don't torture yourself with red raw nipples and a comfort sucker baby for the sake of replacing your nip with a dummy and giving yourself a break... i don't think i'd still be breastfeeding now without the use of the dummy in all honesty.... i've got a really nasty open crack on my left nipple which is gradually toughening up and healing up but if i'd not have used the dummy for the comfort sucking I'd have had to give up through the pain of it all by now...Dummy's definatley can be used from newborn with breastfeeding but think it very much depends on the individual :)

Goodluck

I was reluctant, but at 5 weeks tried it to see if i could get her to sleep longer at night coz she'd wake me for boob but no milk!
Never did she take it though. Tried on a number of occasions but nope.

When Jess was born I had an awful night with her in the hospital coz she wanted to be on my boob all the time. The next day when the doc checked her before discharging us, she had to have her finger in Jess' mouth the whole time otherwise she would scream and doc said "you need a dummy". So of course was the green light for me and gave her one when we got home. After reading stuff later I got really upset as thought had made a mistake and she shouldn't of had it so early but 5 weeks later she is still breast feeding just fine and very occasional feeds from bottle when I express and isn't bothered at all. Has been a god send and saved my nipples, otherwise I think would have given up on BF as so painful. I try not to let her sleep with it but when I take it out she gets upset and when it drops out so can be a bit of a pain when up and down every 5 mins to put back in. She seems to prefer the slightly bigger cherry type dummy which takes over half her face but think its easier for them to keep in when so small.

Wow what an essay sorry, but been no problems for us touch wood.

Noahs had a dummy from a week old because he was comfort sucking which he takes sometimes but tbh he still seems to prefer comfort sucking boobie :?

I have been trying to give Nathaniel one for a week now because he comfort sucks but he just spits it back out! I am breastfeeding too and found that with having to look after my toddler, just occasionally it would be good for him to sit and suck on his own without being attached to me! Does anyone have any advice for getting him to take one???

have u tried different shape ones because we've tried loads and the only one he will consider is the NUK ones

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try to stick it out for a few more days - but I think I will get him one next week if he is still feeding for such a long time at each feed xx
