Down's syndrome test and how they number the risk ?

Congrats on baby being a girl Loula! Very exciting!!

Had you told your work before your results came through? I am just really kicking myself for doing it now. One of the guys at work asked me how many weeks I am yesterday, and when I said 13 he was really shocked and said "is that all?" Like it's early to be announcing. I feel so stupid.

Hi again Loula, another question for you. With the Harmony Test, if the results come back as high risk do you know whether this is classified as anything more than 1:150, the same as the NHS? Thanks!

I work for the NHS on the bank so im not permanently employed i pick up shifts as and when. I havent made it into the office yet as i mainly work nights or weekends when the office isnt open due to living 20 miles away and it fits in with homelife. HAlf term for 2 weeks starts friday so i shall have to go in as i need a new uniform urgently.

With the harmony my results showed a table and the risk factor which was low then on another chart the numbers 13, 18 and 21 were plotted with a %.

Mine came back at 1:10000 and a % of 0.01% then it went up as follows
1:1000 % of 0.1&
1:100 % of 1%
10:100 % of 10%
50:100 % of 50%
90:100 % of 90%
>99:100 % of 99%

It looks easier then it sounds and the comapny said i could ring with any queries and your midwife or screening team should help to. I cannot faukt the screening team i was under they rang to ask if we were ok what we decided and if wed had results and then signed us off.

Thank you so much for the detailed response. Yes, I've booked in to have the Harmony Test on Thursday afternoon (the earliest they could fit me in). We have the discussion with our hospital this morning. So I guess it will be about 2 weeks of waiting. Honestly I don't know how I will handle it, time is dragging already.

I think I just need to try to continue thinking positively. Xx

It's an awful tone and the wait isn't nice but I had mine done on a Sunday and got the results Friday . At least when to have yours done the bloods should go off that day or Friday so just another weekend to get through.

Hi Loula,
No, unfortunately no option for today but I did manage to get in first thing Monday morning. Now I will spend the whole weekend anxious.

I admit I wasn't able to fully take in what she was saying but I think mine was bloods too. What did you decide to do? Did you do any further testing? I'd like to avoid amino if I can. From some research I did today, I found out that the Harmony Test can find 99% accuracy of whether the baby has Down's syndrome. It costs £500 but would be worth it I think.

There is a 1% chance of miscarriage with the amnio apparently.

the irony is, with a chance of 1:131 of downs and a chance of 1: 100 of miscarriage with amnio, by taking the amnio you have more chance of causing the miscarraige of a healthy baby, than you have chance of a baby with downs....

i know it sounds scary but 1 in 131 is a really tiny probability. I mean, if you had cancer and they told you your chances of surviving were only 1 in 131 (less than 1%) you would not be very positive!!!

a friend of mine had a 1:2 risk and her baby was fine!

Thanks so much gymbabeliz. I completely agree with you. My gut feeling is that the baby is ok, hopefully the gut feeling is right. I think I'll proceed with Harmony Test.

i suspect i would make the same choice if finances allowed. I would still continue a pregnancy with a downs baby, but i would rather know than be in limbo uncertain for months. I have my nuchal screening on Monday and as I'm 42 I know the risks. However, my son born last year , had lower odds than my daughter born when i was 31......! so keeping positive

All the best for your screening on Monday, let us know how it goes? Yes - I think we both just need to stay positive. Xxx
