*have put question in last post* thanks :D

*don't worry, got what i wanted in the end*

I'm currently fighting with t-mobile over my upgrade as they want to up my policy by £13 because i want a blackberry and internet on it! They are only offering me the deal any new customer could get!

my problem is that i don't understand all these add ons and stuff and i'm figuring if i go round a few shops they can give me their cheapest deal? and explain it all to me?

Am i going to lose out by doing this?

**Too slow  ** :rotfl:

I would work out exactly what you want first, ie.

*How much per month you're willing to spend
*What handset you want
*What network you want
*What you want to be able to do with the phone, ie. internet, etc.

Secondly I would go into a Carphone Warehouse (yes, I know I used to work for them but they are honestly the best company i've ever worked for) show them your list and ask what's the best deal they can do that best matches your requirements. Then it's onto all the other mobile shops to do the same :)

Always ask if you can 'play' with a live handset, or failing that hold a real one and don't be afraid to ask for alternative handsets. You may find that the Blackberry isn't what you want after all and there's another handset that does what you want that's better suited to you (I personally don't like the PDA/Mobile handsets and prefer to use a laptop with a data card alongside a more functional mobile).

Also, Independant shops sometimes have more room for discount than the network shops as they are fighting for your business that little bit more so tell them what you've been offered and see what they can do.

Thank anyway :D I didn't go for a blackberry in the end - i went for a Nokia 5800 :D and I got it for the same price i'm paying now but including internet on it :D

I followed your previous advice and asked for my pac code... that got them wanting to help me :D so THANKS!!

ooh you worked for carphone warehouse - can you help me with something else then??

I bought a phone in Oct/Nov and the screen on the front has stopped working - it no longer illuminates. I didn't drop it or anything. It cost £79.99 on payg... I have the receipt... what do you think they'll do if i take the phone back?

thanks :D

A lot depends on the make and model of the handset, if you let me know i'll be able to narrow it down a bit but generally they will repair that handset free of charge if it is found to be faulty and not customer damaged.

If you go to an 'Express Repair Centre' they should be able to do the repair in store, otherwise they'll send it to the manafacturer for repair at no extra cost to you.

If a handset goes faulty within 28 days of purchase most places will just do a straight swap for a brand new handset (Carphone Warehouse certainly do), if it's faulty outside of 28 days but under 12 months old Carphone Warehouse can sometimes offer a 24hr refurbished replacement rather than sending it for repair. These handsets are usually the ones returned within 28 days where the original customer has been given a new handset and theirs has been repaired by the manafacturer and sent back (I would only take this option if your handset is over 3 months old or cosmetically damaged in some way).

As I say, tell me the make and model and i'll tell you what I would have done if I still worked in the repairs department

:cheer: thanks :)
It's a sony ericsson w380i
looks like this

the bit on the front is where it is supposed to light up through it with the date/caller/message etc and it doesn't.

It's under 12 months old.

Thanks :D

Two main reasons will be either:

1) Software - A quick software update can cure a lot of different issues. This can be done with newer handsets via the internet browser on the handset. If there's an update available just click to download it and then install it.

Go to 'Settings' - 'Update Service' - 'Check for Update'

2) Physical Damage - Any handset with a hinge, whether it be a flip or slide phone has the same weak point. This is where the flexible ribbon cable runs through the hinge area. All it takes is small bits of grit, etc. to get into the hinge and after a few flips or slides it's caught the flex and torn it.

This can only be fixed by an engineer but can be done on site at a Carphone Warehouse with a repairs department.

This all comes under warranty faults so you shouldn't have any issues getting it fixed. One thing I would do is to remove the battery and check on the battery and inside the battery compartment for little white stickers (There are more inside the handset but you can't get to them).
If these have gone pink or red then you're buggered  as it means that liquid, whether it be condensation, rain, or total submergence has occurred and that voids the warranty instantly :(

You will not be able to argue that it's never got wet, etc. as there is nothing the engineer can do under warranty (I used to try and fix handsets that were liquid damaged as best I could but not every engineer will bother to try).

thanks, that's a great help :) All stickers are still white, i'll take it in soon and let them do their stuff!
My new phone arrives tomorrow so i'll take it in once i've transferred my stuff across. Thanks for all the help :D x
