Domperidone

Despite best efforts, i am not producing enough milk to feed lil man. Breastfeeding councillor has advised that i go on a drug called Domperidone to help increase lactation. Has anyone else been on this? Results?

I asked about this at my Dr the other week and they refused to give it to me as "it's not safe for babies!" what a load of crap seeing as its given to babies for reflux!
I asked again about it today and the Dr said he's never heard of it increasing milk supply! I give up!

I've read reviews that say it works so worth a try? X

Ive read about it online. My LO is on it for reflux so looked at the leaflet. Says not to use while bf as a small amount can be passed to the baby. But as mrsT says, babies are given it for reflux so not sure what the effect would be on a baby thats not got reflux.
Wud be interesting to see what ur gp says

larlybelle was given it to increase her milk supply, maybe pm her or post in baby n toddler for her to see?

Yeah I'm on it! Have been for 8 weeks now. It has defiantly helped my milk supply. I'm feeling a lot fuller most of the time.

Henrys suck to swallow ratio was 5-6:1, it should be 1-2:1. The lactation consultant worked out it was down to my pcos.

She said that Henry will get some of the domperidone but no where near as much as he would if he were prescribed it for reflux so it's totally safe for him.

Its been a bit of a nightmare tbh. He spent nearly two days just constantly feeding and wouldnt settle at all- i was so exhausted. He was loosing weight too, so we are having to top up with formula. I've been expressing too but getting hardly anything, between 2-8 mls depending on when he last fed. Mw has observed feeds and checkd position etc and cant see any issues there, i just dont have enoigh milk. Will go to the gp and see what she says. Fx it helps, although if not then i'll just keep topping up.

id deffo stress that the breastfeeding advisor said to do it as most gp's arent really up on bf'ing or anything to do with it and just read the lil book that says not recommended for blah blah blah

Mw has written a letter and also given me a bf assesment to take along too so hopefully that wont be an issue.

GPs unfortunately are not pro.BF. Most likely they will tell you to top up.
Makes me mad!
I.ended up mixed feeding for thw same reason hun, he is now almost 1 and i still am. Good luck, hope you get domperidone

If you cant get Domperodone or if it doesnt work, dont beat yourself up. As long as you offer breast first, supply should still be ok.
Main thing is that your baby and you are thriving and happy

He always goes to the breast first and if hubby is going to do a night feed for me then i express ss much as i can for him.

I always swore i wouldn't put pressure on myself to bf. If i could then great but if not then so be it. The thing is, i actually really like bf- looking down and seeing him at the breast brings a smile to my face. But, if the meds dont work then theres nothing more i can do except top up afterwards. At least i can honestly say i gave it a good shot though.

Its exactly how i felt, plus all the sterilising and making up the formula is a faff. But i had no choice, noone offered me domperidone, they just said keep pumping, fenugreek but it didnt work. I know domperidone worked for people so fx for you

At the moment he's being bf, plus formula top up, then i have to express and he has that too. Takes nearly 2 hours to feed, prep bottle, feed, sterilise, express, feed, wind and change!!! Lol!!

When the bf guru told me I needed it I called my drs for an appt, told them what it was for & they said if the bf guru has recommended it then all I had to do was email in all the info & the dr would do a prescription for me. I've not seen the dr about it but get my prescription every month. They must've got annoyed keep doin it cos this month I had the repeat prescription bit!
