I no its a tiny amount of money to spend on a car, but I need one with low insure as I cant afford much.

Ive spent 2 blumming days on car websites (but to be honest I dont know whats good and whats not lol) :wall:

Just wondered if anyone has a car that they bought on the cheap and it works great? Were thinking about a Fiat Punto. Anyone owed or driven one of these cars??

Thanks girls ...any help/replys very much needed and appreciated!

i bought a fiest and a mini for under a grand. both were very good reliable cars. look in the local free ad paper or something.

I had a Ford Fiesta for my first car, it was a 1.0 - was very cheap to insure, and Fords are cheap to repair as the parts are easy to get hold of (well thats what I was told anyay :D ). I would def recommend a fiesta.

My bro had a fiat, and that was actually the worst car any of us ever had, it kept breaking down and lived up to the Fix It Again Tony nickname it has  [/b]

Not any real advice - you've obviously been looking hard. But take into consideration the insurance group and emmisions - if its a slightly older car thats what the tax band is calculated on.

Hope you can find something. As you need a bargain try ebay, but try before you buy if possible. Check all the car's history and make sure it starts first time every time. Sounds obvious but its a tell tale sign the car will fail you if the engine doesnt sound right or is a bit tempermental.

Izzy

PS. My brother bought a car on ebay for £1 once and used it for ages! Plus he found £1.20 down the side of the seat when he collected it he got his money's worth!

My last car in England was a K reg 1.4 nissian micra. It cost me £500 and i loved that car. It only cost £189 to insure with shelias wheels lol

My car cost £250 two years ago - it's a Mazda something  - I only know the colour cos it's that lovely Jade colour that was v fashionable a few years back. I bought it from a friend who had maintained it perfectly and it's the same age as Josh. Since then we had to spend a little money (bout 150 quid) on one MOT and a fiver on the next one. My car before that cost us £50 and was for me to learn to drive in. My OH had always had vehicles from work so we'd never had one before. OH keeps on about wanting a new car - but I'd be petrified of banging it or it being stolen.

You might find you get a better deal (or a newer model) if you tried private sellers, so look in the local newspaper, the friday-ad motors section, you could try ebay too, I know someone who sold via ebay as his back gave in and couldn't get in/out of it to drive safely anymore and the buyer got a great car at a great price too. Worth checking out places and local ad's that are not dealers of any form in my opinion. The only issue with that is that via a garage you might get a years warrenty, with a private sale you wouldn't - take someone to look at it that knows what's what under the bonnet etc although where ever you buy a car from your not guarenteed to have plain sailing with it.

I actually used to sell 2nd hand cars for a living (trying not to sound like a dodgy car trader but my partners family are all in that business)
the only advice I would give is never ever ever buy an older renault clio, they almost always have eletrical faults which take ages to diagnose and repair!!
Other than that you run pretty much the same risks with any 2nd hand car just stick to low insurance group models and I would recommend buying from a trader even if you do have to pay a little bit more as all traders are legally bound to give you at least 6 months warranty!!!
If you buy a car from a private person and the engine gives in the very next day you are pretty much screwed!

PS. dont buy a rover either no matter how cheap you can find one, they are also prone to faults and since the factory at longbridge closed most of the spares suppliers have gone under so they can be really expensive to repair!!!!

we have a fiat punto that we got off auto trader ours is a v reg and it cost £1500 thay had loads on there for less than that but hubby was very fussy, we have had a few probs but nother major the most expensive thing was £15. the only thing is our pram takes up the whole boot so we are looking for a buggy now.

Hi I have got an N reg Citroen Saxo that I paid £900 for over a year ago at auction. So far I havn't had any problems with it and if you do parts are fairly cheap anyway. My tax, insurance and petrol costs are also low. The Peugeot 106 is actually the same as the Citroen Saxo so either would be good. Look in your local paper or auto trader. I got mine at auction but my OH is a mechanic so I took him with me to be safe.

hubby brought a £400 corsa diesel , the engines go for miles ! and cheao to nsure and run

iv got a corsa 1.7 deisal which i paid around £1,200 for (from DF - cheeky bleeder!!) lol

its sooo cheap to run but insurance i pay £1,400 a year - that may be because of my age and because i have only been driving over a year

We bought a Subaru Impreza estate for £624 off Ebay a while back. We had to have a new cat on it a few weeks ago that cost about £200 but other than thats it's been okay so far.
