I've been at my current job since February but my tax code is still BR which I *think* is an emergency tax code?? :?

I got a form a while ago from the Inland Revenue asking for details of my income to make sure I don't pay too much tax, so I sent it off but nothing has changed.

I'm really confused :? :wall:

Yeah thats "Basic Rate" which is emergency tax - you will need to make sure your HR department has a copy of your P45 :)

Yep that is basic rate keep following this up though because I was put on Basic Rate and didnt know because I had only just started working and didnt understand till my boss said about it....since October 2005 I have been owed £1500 in tax and NOBODY at the tax office is doing anything about it. Its so frustrating. (I have sent at least 15 letters and called not joking 50-100 times!!!) Try and send another form to change it if you still hear nothing get down to the CAB and get them to deal with it the CAB seems to be the magic word as far a s tax is concerned.

Yeah I keep hearing about people getting over £1000 back but the amount I get taxed seems to be about right for the amount I earn :?

My head hurts, I HATE dealing with tax and shit, I just wanna go to work and earn my pennies

I'll make a few calls tomorrow, see if I can sort it out :)

i *think* basic rate is where you get taxed on everything from the word go (thats BR as far as i know)
i am on emergency tax (lloyds are holding my P45 the w*nkers). ON my wage slip it says my tax code which is what it should be, but at the side of it is says tax period one and ithink it stays at that until they get my P45 (filled in a P46). That mean i can earn £400 per month (£112 per week) before i get taxed.
Hope that helps

the only thing with the tax office is that its only open 9-5 monday to friday.. so if you work 8-6 like my husband does you can never ring the buggers..i think alex is gettign taxes to much.. on the web site it says that having a L after your code is emrgency tax to.. so im a little confuzed lol..(he had l after his)

Thanks for the replies :)

I didn't have a P45 for last year cos I wasn't working so obviously I couldn't give it to my employer.

So do I ring my office first or the tax office?

Ring your tax office and request a P90 form, this will ask you what you have been doing since April of a certain tax year. If you get one to fill in from April 2007 then they should refund you from the 07-08 tax year (which ended last April) and sort out your tax code for the present year.

Probably a stupid question but you aren't working two jobs are you? BR is the normal tax code for a second job as it would indicate that your personal allowance was being used at your first job.

Also when you started your job did you have to fill in a form which stated whether this was your only employment? If not ask your employer why they didn't provide you with this form (the form number escapes me at the mo - damn pregnancy brain) as you were unable to provide a P45 and tell them that you are paying far more tax than is needed currently.

Hope that helps.
