Ok my boss left it to the last minute to employ my cover. So basically we are running out of option on who to employ. We had a lady in today and she was really nice and perfect for the job. But !!! she wants more money so basically she will be earning £1 less than me an hour. I have worked all these years to get the salary i get and she can just walk in and demand what she wants as we have left it so late!

I suppose i could put up with that fact but she might be kept on part time when i come back so i will have worked 8 years to get the wages i do and she will have work 6 months!!

I hate work!!!

exactly the same as me.... so annoying! but my company took someone on who was on the same wage as me.... seems like you get nothing for loyalty.... i love my job and always put in more than i'm supposed to... yet the new person comes and goes - does the hours and thats it... makes me so mad... makes you think whats the point...

If the person is doing the SAME job as you, I would expect them to be paid the same as you. If they are only a contractor (ie no paid sick, paid holidays etc) then I would expect them to be paid more than you. Unless I am missing something? We couldn't find anybody with the right skills to cover my job and I have had to try and split my job up into bits and pass different parts onto 4 different people, and even then I know there is going to be gap left there and a lot of things will wait for me to come back. I had 4 weeks off work last year to recover from surgery and I couldn't believe how absolutely everything just waited for me!

I know it seems really unfair - it happens alot. But when we were recruiting for a maternity cover for a girl at my work we had to even raise the salary slightly to get someone prepared to take a job just for 6 months.

I'm a contractor and probably earn on par with my boss but lose out in other ways like maternity pay as I havent been with them long enough, sick pay, holidays etc. Bank holidays are part of my holiday entitlement when I cannot even choose to work as the office is closed.

I think companies generally dont reward loyal staff anyway. My mum has been with the NHS for 17 years and fought hard for her increments when some chick fresh from college sauntered in on one scale less, she was quite rightly fuming.

Private sectors tend to have more leaway in awarding rises but then dont tend to keep staff as long as folk move about more chasing the money.

Its not particularly fair but its one of these things that happen. Loyalty doesnt seem to go a long way when it comes down to pounds and pence.
Dont worry, you wont be caring too much once baby is here.
What job???
