Hi mums,

Im actually asking on behalf of a friend as she has her midwife coming round saturday to do a sweep and if nothing happens in 24 hours she will be booked in for an induction (she was due last weekend). She asked me to find out whether sweeps are usually succesful, oh and how they actually work (i know its something to do with the membrain).

Thanks!

i had 2 and they didnt work so i had to be induced

basically the put their fingers inside you and sweep round, it doesnt hurt

Mine didnt work but then again he couldnt really get to anything to * sweep* :wall: :wall:

First one - no.

Second one - ouch yes! But I was already a bit dilated and had pains coming & going.

oh dear thats not a great success rate so far.. will wait for a few more replies before i tell her!

i had a sweep when i was 1cm dilated, but i was having pains and it worked. It really hurt for me, but the nurse was very vigorous

I had a sweep when I was already 1-2cm but hadn't realised. She said she stretched me to about 4 (b*tch lmao) and that was 9am Thursday morning. I had Ryan 8.27pm Friday night. The pains felt like period pains all day after, and makes you bleed (but its ok). The Friday morning I was in more pain, had a long bath and started getting contractions.. went into hospital at 3pm, 5cm dilated. Hope that helps. I was 10 days overdue when I had him, 9 when I had the sweep and my induction was booked for term+12 but luckily I didn't make it til then :)

If she was already showing some labour signs at the 24 hours they would probably just let her carry on instead of being induced any further I would have thought, but I might be wrong x

I was told if nothing happened within 48 hours then it didn't work. I had mine and it hurt, but i was really tense. I gave birth 5 days later, so it didn't work for me.

mine worked first time - i was 40+1 having the sweep (11ish am) and gave birth @ 7.02 the following morning

i had 3 sweeps. One at 38 weeks... nowhere near ready! Then one at 40 weeks... that one didn't work and then one at 40+5 - that one didn't work neither!!! I was then offered one the day before i was due to be induced and opted NOT to have one. I didn't see the point of going through another one (and it probably not working) and then having to go through being induced as well.

Mine worked :cheer: I had a sweep when I was 41 weeks at 1.30pm on the Wednesday and Jacob was born at 12.28pm on the Thursday :cheer:

My first two, at almost 40 and 41 weeks didn't work. The one at 42 was done by a consultant OB/GYN instead of the midwives and it was painful. She scooped out some of the plug! I went into labour soon after, but I was ready to and may have done so even without the sweep

1st sweep didn't hurt and didn't work!
2nd sweep killed like a biaaatch and got me to 2cm dilated the next day from nothing!

Then I was in labour, but had the pessary to move things forward x

Thanks ladies, shes been told that she will have one sweep then if it doesnt work she will be booked in for an induction. sounds like a few people on here have had more than one though.. strange..

Mine worked, I had it first thing in the morning and started having contractions mid evening that same day. Had baby a few hours later.

If the first sweep doesn't work, you usually get offered another a few days later. Not sure how far along your friend is, perhaps if she's further along they're only offering her one. I had mine at 40 weeks exactly and my midwife had said she would do another at a day before 41 weeks when my next appointment was if baby still hadn't arrived.

Normally, they do them at 41 weeks at the earliest but many of us have had them prior to that. It will vary from area to area.

I had 2 sweeps. The first hurt like hell and the second hurt like hell!!
The first they couldnt reach much because my cervix was too high up. The second was a little more reachable but was still too high but the midwife stuck her fist in so far up she maanaged to just reach it......but it still didnt work.....and it hurt like hell :wall:

I was induced in the end and being induced hurt way less than having a sweep.
I had 2 sweeps but i think that was because they couldnt reach my cervix the first time so asked if i wanted to try again before i was induced.
I ended up being 11 days overdue when i was induced so i think if she is getting quite late then they will only try 1 sweep and if that doesnt work they may as well induce her. She may be able to ask to have 2 sweeps but im not sure if they see that there there is any point unless they couldnt do it the first time because of her cervix etc. Good luck to her.

Nope :( I was three centimeters dialated though when he did it and ended up being induced9 days later. It did give me a massive bloody show and false contractions

Had a sweep at 37+6, I was 1-2cms. It was uncomfortable, but not painful. Went into labour the next day (38 weeks) and had her the day after that at 38+1.
