hiya all i thought i would make a brand new post for this one as i am a little confused about the time i actually got pregnant as it doesn't seem to add up from the date of my last period. i am totally new to baby stuff and have no idea about dates and stuff and how to work it out so maybe i have done it all wrong so please correct me if i am wrong but this is how i have worked it out.

i had my first scan this week on wednesday 23rd january 2008. according to that the baby is 15 weeks and 1 day. if you go back 15 weeks and 1 day from the 23rd on a calender that should bring you to 9th october 2007. the first day of my last period was october 15th which means i was pregnant before i had my last period. if this is right why did i have that period is it common to have a last period while pregnant. i know some people have periods still all the way through so i guess its nothing to be concerned over it just meant that it took me longer to find out i was pregnant as i thought i wasn't with having that period. so when i found out i was pregnant i was 6 weeks already when i only thought i was about 3 or could it be that the baby is growing too quick and looks 15 weeks when only its about 12 or 13. i should have realised it didn't add up when the midwife said i was 12 weeks 2 weeks ago which would have made me pregnant the week i had my period when we didn't have sex at all. i'm so confused can anyone put me right

I'm not 100% certain of the answer but since I'm the only other one up at 2am I didn't want to read and run!

My "12 week scan" put me back a week and a bit from when I thought it should have been.. so I thought I conceived the beginning November but they told me more towards middle November which I knew couldn't have been right. Ryan was born 10 days overdue, so I'm guessing my dates were right after all 8)

Scans can be out as you'll read others say, babies can measure all sorts, lots of people end up being told they're a week/couple of days earlier or later than they thought, but scans can never be 100% accurate really, it's just to give a rough idea and something for them to compare to in the notes, I think it's probably unlikely they'll ever know the exact time and date the baby was conceived.

Or there's also "implantation bleeding" that a lot of people talk about on here where you bleed when the egg embryo thingy whatever its called embeds in the womb lining. I don't know how common that is - do a google/wikipedia search on it for more info as I didn't have it - but that could be a possibility?

Sorry I can't be more help. Remember your dates though, and see if your baby comes out on *your* due date, not theirs :D

Best of luck with your pregnancy, and this forum is a fab place to get answers and make friends, hope to see you around :D

also a normal pregnancy is anything from 38-40 weeks , conception can take place up to five days after intercourse, scans can be inaccurate (measurement is from one fuzzy line to another not a crisp line - a mm difference each way can add days) - really the only reason for a 'due date' is in case of premature labour - needing to know how far on so whether need steroids and to try to delay labour and for post term induction - need to know how long safe to leave it

there is also gestational age and weeks since lmp - with me a gestationaly age of 12 weeks means 15 weeks since my last period as I have long cycles and ovulate late in the cycle so it depends which age was being quoted - very confusing - speak to your midwife - agree on a date and stick with it - good luck :)

your scan was only 6 days out from your lmp so if I were you I would stick to a due date from your lmp - if that was an implantation bleed not a period the scan would be out by more than 6 days

hope i havent made things more complicated

the weeks start from your LMP and you ovulate around 2 weeks after your period (on a normal 28 day cycle) so if the dates the scan gave were right then you just ovulated early that month the first 2 weeks of pregnancy your not actually pregnant so i your last period would have been nothing ot worry about.

dates, dates. confusion.
i wouldnt worry too much hun. i know for a fact the ay i concieved and when i went for my datin scan they put me a week back. on the next 2 scans i got put a week forward agen which would make my conception date right,. however they did not change it on my notes and wont do and this has put me a week behind agen!
baby will come when it wants anyway so whatever date is right for u just go by that lol. thats what i did.x
