Has anyone had/ having cognative behaviour therapy? I have had a bit of PND since I had my LO last November and was reading about this CBT thing and it sounded good so my doc has referred me for it. I was just wondering what anyone thought of it? I take tablets too but I just feel like they dont solve the problem, they just take the edge off how you feel. Dont get me wrong, I love being a mum, its just that I sometimes feel quite negative about everything and am determined to do whatever it takes to get myself completely well again. Any advice or opinions on it would be great.

Can be quite worthwhile hunny. CBT looks at how you interpret events and deal with them. One thing might affect an individual quite profoundly yet have little or no impact on another so they'll look at how you deal with things, your thoughts and feelings. They'll look at situations which cause anxiety, what you think and look at better ways to deal with it.

For example you might not want to go out, you'll discuss your thoughts and feelings when you do go out and why it causes anxiety then you'll probably do practical homework like walking to the local shop and you write down how you felt, what made you anxious, stuff like that. Go for it :)

I had a basic run of this through counselling and it seemed to work alright. It challenges why you think about things the way you do, and changes the way your mind responds as opposed to how you respond to what your mind tells you. If that makes sense? Would definately recommend, it's not any sort of brainwashing, just makes you realise a lot of deep ingrown thoughts you have, and then you start to change them from the core instead of just talking around them.

I used to have problems with relationships in general and the way I communicate with and trust other people, and I had like a diary to fill in for whenever I felt low/uncomfortable (as well as when I felt particularly good/happy) and I wrote what the situation was, how I felt, and why I think it made me feel that way. I could then identify what obstacles I was subconciously facing, as the same sort of answers kept coming up. So then my next challenge was the next time I could foresee a similar situation occuring, I should change how I approach it and I therefore then stop the bad feeling before it starts.

Sorry if that post makes no sense.

I gave up smoking with it, Allen carrs easyway to stop smoking is based on it, went from 20 a day to none in one 5 hour session and have never wanted a ciggie since, totally changed the way i perceived smoking. Thats my only experience with it but it was a positive one

Thanks for the replies, sounds well worth a try. I read the Allen Carr book a year and a half ago actually and it did totally change the way I felt about smoking, didnt realise that it was a form of cbt. Really looking forward to it now, doesnt seem like going could do any harm anyway!

CBT has a really good reputation i'v read about lots of OCD sufferers who its really helped, and OCD looks like it can hav a powerful hold over people and their lives. i'd say def. give it a try. good luck!

it helped me through my counselling with the issues i was facing, but also in doing it, he discovered i was bi-polar lol
