Cheapest way Dover/Calais?

Well I bought my OH these tickets for the rugby world cup, and it's SUCH a pain organising how he's gonna get there!

He needs to get from Birmingham to Lens, which is near Lille, in the north.

I just wondered if anyone here has made trip across the channel and if there are any cheaper ways to do it. The Eurostar is a fortune!!

Last year we went from Dover to Dunkerque (just down from Calais) for £152 with the car an caravan with Norfolk Line ferries. Was really cheap but maybe worth a look?

ferry is cheaper but means driving.

Eurostar is expensive & costly but very comfy

We're looking into him maybe doing something like the train to Dover then going on the ferry as a foot passenger.

The Eurostar from London is £120, he doesn't mind doing that but as he's never been to France or on the ferry we kinda want him to go on the boat, it's more fun

We upgraded to "1st class" too which was pretty cheap and you could help yourself to cakes /pastries and drinks!
