well i got back to work yesterday after having the day off for my birthday and guess what? The B&stards are making me redundant.

5 months pregnant and they are getting rid of me (plus a whole load of other people). I am the breadwinner with a sky high mortgage and how can I get another job now?

Am so angry, can't stop crying. Have called in sick today, am so digusted. How could they do that to a pregnant woman? I mean it's not like i was going to cost them anything, a measley £118 a week and then 92% of that can be claimed back.

What am I suposed to do now for the next 4 months?

You need to check their redundancy policy and selection criteria - it is illegal to make a woman redundant just because she is pregnant - in fact they can get into loads of trouble for it - you would be eligible for a claim under discrimination legislation.

PM me if you want some more help.

I would definitely speak to a lawyer, or similar.........

Companies have to follow their exact redundancy policy, and have to go through giving you notice etc that you might be made redundant, and ensure all correct procedures are actioned, this can include discussing other opportunities within the company - they cannot just announce they are making you redundant and not offer a payout etc.

Having been made redundant twice (the 2nd time after being very sick and in hospital for weeks) I managed to leave both times with a significant payout (over £18,000 both times) having threatened legal proceedings/tribunals etc.....your employer is on very thin ice considering you are pregnant, and I guess are hoping you will put up and shut up - DONT, you have to fight your corner!!!

PM me if you need any further advice or help, and get goggling employment law, and unfair redundancy!!

Not me but my oh is going to be made redundant come new year!! its horrible and also couldn't of happened at a worse time for us! so i know exactly how you are feeling darling! xx

Aww poor you, how awful, good luck hope you get a pay out xxx

awww hun
they can only make positions redundant and not people... like the others have said, I would dig through your policies etc you will be entitled to some sort of pay out

thanks eveyone, am going to do some research now!

Aw hun I know it must be terrifying but try to keep as calm as you can and follow everyone elses advice. Have a look at the other people that are going are they getting rid of a whole department/section? Or are they cherry picking who they want shot of?
Also as someone said it is the position that is made redundant not the person so if they are making you redundant but someone who is not being made redundant is going to be doing your job they are breaking the law. Also legally if your position is opened up again within a certain time limit (I can't remember if it is 6 months or 12) they have to by law offer the job to you first.

I am being made redundant but because my job finishes after my maternity leave would start they have to pay me my full maternity pay (6 months full pay/3 months SMP) So I will be on maternity leave for four months then get the rest of my maternity pay & redundancy pay.

I know how your feeling it is not nice and I am sending you lots of

My Team are finishing in two weeks and I know I am going to be an emotional wreck leading up to the day, the day itself and afterwards. I will then have 7 weeks left before I finish - I am just glad my dates have worked out ok for me & because I have been there for 6 years I get a good package

As others have said you need to get it all check out where you stand. I am lucky & work for a large company so have a staff council who support us and attend meetings as witnesses so the company cannot change what they have said etc and this support has helped me emotionally and make sure I am not being diddled out of anything I am owed!

Hi hun

Really sorry to hear that you are being made redundant. I can really sympathise as I was made redundant last month.
I had only been with them for 7 months and thought I would not get a penny out of them and obviously panicked about the future and finance - I earnt slightly more than my husband.

However, I joined the union at work as soon as I found out and had some meetings with them about my position. I was encouraged to really play the pregnancy card with them and ask for as much as possible. I also argued that I would have been 6 weeks short of qualifying for the Statutory Maternity Pay.
The result was pretty good considering I had only been employed with them for 7 months - I ended up getting £6,500.00 out them.

It is really worth getting a case together, seeking some advice from a union person if possible or CAB/solicitor.

PM me if you need further help

i would def seek legal advise. It won't change what is happening, but it can help financially. there is never a good time to be made redundant, but if you have to be when pg is prob the best time - there is always a chance you can claim its cause of you being pregnant and get some money out of it.

We have had people made redundant at my work lately and the package they got was rubbish!!! not even a months pay in one case.

thanks eveyone

I have a HR meeting on Tues. I think as I have been there less than 2 years the best i can get is 1 months notice plus any holiday accrued.

Also they said they would still pay me maternity pay...so looks like i will be ok after all.

I don't think i am entitled to any more?? I ahve been therr 1 year and 10 months.
