You have inspired me. I am moving house soon, and having to get rid of all my huge aquariums. So I was wondering about keepin birds. I want something low maintenance that is not smelly like rodents.

If I got budgies do I need more than one, how big a cage do I need and how noisy are they (I had cockatiels sp? as a child and they made a racket.) I dont want to get a huge cage, so is a small cage ok for budgies, or would I be better off going for a different type of bird?

1 young male cock will be perfect for you cat!

find a good breeder. Make sure the birds are kept clean and tidy and they all look healthy.
Ask the breeder for a baby male budgie. No older than 8 weeks.

Get a good sized cage

the ferplast rekord 4 is a great cage.

Keep one bird at first. Spend loads of time with it and it will reward you will endless hours of pleasure.

join my forum cat and ask loads of questions on there. everyone is friendly and you will get loads of tips.

Where are you in the .uk?

I will be moving to Norwich.

I like the sound of a nice male cock.

i got myself 2 budgies from the pet shop, male ones which were supposed to be 14 weeks old. they made loadsa mess and noise, then one of them fell ill with an infection and died  and the other was left on his own then he dies suddenly without warning, think he was lonely without his friend. it was nice having them but i wouldnt get anymore, they were very messy.....

this is why i recommend buying from a breeder! its much safer and the birds are generally in better health. Its cheaper too. A shop will buy a bird from a breeder for £2 and sell for £14 where as a good breeder will sell directly to you for around £8.

Cat if you lived closer i know breeders around here. You need to look in your local paper for breeders. It may be hard at this time of year but not impossible. Get a male baby around 8 weeks old. Check out the forum (which i think you've joined) to see how to tell a young budgie from an adult.

I had 2 mice and 1 got sick and died and the other one died because he missed his brother too much :(..i know its not about budgies but kind of relates to the post about the 2 from the pet shop

If you live Darn Sarth I have a budgie on 4 eggs. Budge has seen my babies from Jan that the same pair had.

I have actually found on my yellowpages a bird breeder, very near me, so once the time comes I will prob give them a call. Plus the president of the East anglia budggie assoc is near, but everytime I try to go on their wesite I crash :(

I know from having other pets in te past to stay well clear of non-specialist shops like pets at home!
