Baby is 4 days old and my milk has started to come in...just wondering is it normal how much he is feeding? He has been on me the whole morning! Probably had a 10 minute break! He just won't sleep/settle!

Midwife should be over at so e point today so will ask her just wondering if you lot experienced this?

Yup! Hugely normal! My first 4-6 weeks I spent sat on the sofa. Baby attached to me. He is establishing his milk supply. Make the most of it, make sure you have the remote, water and snacks next to you and relax! My midwife told me it was your body making you rest after giving birth :)

Oh ok....so I shouldn't make any plans then! :) all my family want to see him and hold him and as soon as they do he wants feeding! Not really comfortable getting my nips out in front of the men in the family!

I know it's hard isn't it! I still feel like that. Invest in a good pashmina I say! You're doing great tho :)

Brilliant idea...I keep wrapping his blankets over me and I boil!

When Henry was 4 days I remember him being attached to me the whole day. Like pinky says he is establishing the milk supply.

Pashmina idea is good. I personally have just flopped my boob out! Don't see my boobs as somethin sexual anymore, they feed my baby so if he needs it he will get it. I'm not bothered about them seein my nips anymore!

I will probably get to that point too! My OH so wants to help and have a cuddle but Ollie just not letting him! Will this calm down soon...he's literally been attached to me!

It does! We're going 2 hours between feeds BUT most people go even longer at this stage.

Henry will sleep for 3-4 hours each time but when he is awake he feeds a lot to make up for it! He has only just in the last week let daddy cuddle him and settle him. It's also the smell of ur breastmilk that calms him too.

i had to give formula top ups so daddy can settle but if id let her Alyssa would be attatched to me while sleeping even now lol. she doesnt like to unlatch even when asleep. she only lets go when totally KO'd but she sleeps for 3 or 4 hrs at a time if she sleeps properly. shame shes just noticed we put her down when she sleeps so shes started waking up when put down and crying.

Thanks ladies! He's made me work today...he's so strong too so I'm trying to guide his head and he's pushing away-my wrists are hurting! He slept for 2 hours and woke...I gave him some water and then let him latch and he is a lot more settled...

Just wondering now though...he hasn't had a dirty nappy today a few wet no dirty!

My lo only poos every 3 or 4 days. Normal for her :) although they are always massive! As long as he is comfortable he should be fine. He may push back if you are holding the back of his head. It is best to hold them at the top of their neck because they need to be able to pull their heads back if they choke. Do you have a nursing pillow! You can support the baby on the pillow and that should help your wrists :)

Yea have a pillow holding his neck...I'm sure he'll get it eventually he seems happy going from bottle to boob-I think he works himself up sometime when he can't latch! And then just goes a bit mad.

Oh ok...I thought he would be pooing everyday...was a bit worried! Nah he seems plenty happy!

Midwife said she thinks he's a little tongue tied...what's this? I've heard it mentioned but never really looked it up.

tongue tie is the little muscle/tendon thingy under the tongue (the thin bit attatched to the bottom of your mouth and tongue) being a little short which stops them being able to poke their tongue out much. depending on the severity it can stop them latching properly or just be a little awkward. it can stretch or it can be cut if necessary to allow them to feed properly.

A2m just curious as to why you're giving baby water? X

Oh he sticks it out all the time! I don't think there's a problem with that! Maybe a little fussy!

He had urate crystals in his urine sign of dehydration usually found in breast fed newborns until the milk comes in. So thought some water would do him fine...before this my grandad had said baby looks like he has a sore belly so to give him some water.

Aww poor bubs, dehydration is no fun, hoping he feels much better now. X

Yea he's a lot more settled...wish I thought about water before. Just hope my milk comes in today...

How long was it before everyone's milk came in? Tomorrow is day 5 for me.

I'm pretty sure mine came in around day 5 cod Henry was constantly feeding. It had def come in by day 7 for me xx

Hope things are settling but I would advise against water just now, you need your milk to settle and water has no nutrition for babies, generally breastfed babies don't need it unless really constipated or very hot weather. Kynon is nearly 6 months and I've only just started giving him water in a tippy cup, plus you don't want nipple confussion so early on. Hang in there, they do settle down but enjoy the cuddles and closeness of those first few weeks, watch lots of films and let everyone run around after you :)
