Hi Ladies,

Have any of you breastfed a child with a tongue tie?

I've been feeding Joey for nearly 8 weeks with not too many problems. However, after doing some research on the subject there are some things he does when feeding that I thought were normal but apparently indicate poor attachment and jaw fatigue from the inability to compress my breast properly with his tongue/mouth.

He is gaining weight really well but he does fuss and cry (sometimes hysterically) during feeding and I hate the thought of him being so frustrated.

Anyone have any coments or experience?

Thanks

my son has a tounge tie only tiny one but he just couldnt latch on when he did he was taking in more air than milk so i chose to express but i couldnt keep up with him in terms of washing/steralising botles and expressing i was run wragged. so i swapped to formula i dont regret it either as he took to a bottle teat so much better.

hope u find a way to solve ur hic-up but if babs is gaining weight he must be doing okay with BF

Well done you.

Isla was born very badly tongue tied and by the time they cut it she was a week old (they lost the scissors!) and had dropped from 8lb 12 borthweight to 7lb 3 and they wouldnt let me try any longer as she had lost over 12% of her bodyweight!

I wanted to breastfeed so badly and it never occurred to me that she wouldnt take to it. She latched on (of so i thought until taught otherwise) then shook her head off when the milk didnt come. I was red raw and cried everytime i tried to feed her.

I tried to express but 15 minutes gave me a tiny 1/4 oz, i switched to bottles and she was soooo relieved and a different baby.

I hate bottle feeding and especially now i know shes allergic to cows milk, but it was for the best.

You sound like your doing so well, and i am very jelous. Well done you if baby is gaining weight well done. Nice to hear a story of a tongue tied baby who does breastfeed well, Keep going!!!!

Freya had a 100% tongue tie and breast fed well, the only problem was she was quite windy and seemed to 'slip' off of the breast. We had it released at 2 weeks, it was very simple and she fed well afterwards. Before it was released she was gaining beautifully but now she isn't, with an averag of two and a half ounces a week. The hv said they need to relearn how to feed, nt sure if the poor weight gain is connected but it is a big coincidence.
