Hi, hope I'm posting in the right bit, but my problem is this ...

Went to the dentist yesterday & she told me that my (one) amalgam filling is leaking  & she wants to replace it. Fine, made the appropriate appointment & left.

However, this morning whilst awake at stupid o'clock I googled leaking fillings (I know, I know :oooo:) & am now very confused about the whole procedure & the effect it may have on my little (6m) boy.

Apparently it's a more complicated procedure than a normal filling removal with extra precautions to be taken, (I've not been warned about anything) as i will be exposed to Mercury when she drills. This is obviously a worry as I am breastfeeding & didn't really have any desire to stop.

Just wondering if anyone has also had to have this done whilst BF'ing & how they managed it as I didn't really want to introduce formula but expressing wise, I don't get as much even with an electric pump.

So sorry for the long post but I'm very confused & actually getting a little bit bothered
by it. 😢

Oh yea, this is before I even think about the mercury I've been slowly feeding my baby via my milk. 😭

Thanks in advance xxx

I'm not sure what you've read, but I googled and everything I saw said a leaky filling is one with a gap between the filling and the tooth so shouldn't pose any risk. I've had a large filling removed and replaced and my dentist had no concerns about doing so while breastfeeding. She's also given me new fillings. I don't think you need to worry.

Hi,
A leaking filling is just a gap and all or just a bit of the filling will need to be removed for the seal against the tooth to be completedand protect the tooth from further decay or infection. The vapour that many be released from a filling being drilled is kept to a minimum and is kept under water and sectioned away so that it's not injested.
I personally would not worry about it and I worked as a dental nurse for a few years.
I'm going to be a first time mum in December so was in the breastfeeding forum for tips and advice as really want to bf. I'm just trying to read on stuff and have read that if you do have a alcoholic drink or any medication then to express prior to the drink for eg and then use this for the feeds then express the next couple of feeds and throw the milk away so may be something that could work for you. Apologies if I'm a bit niaeve on the bf but hope I've helped to settle your worries. Also speak to the dentist and they will will help. :)
