Hiya. I want to cut back on breast feeding to twice a day and give him a bottle the other times. I have tried with the bottle i have but it is the one i was expressing into when he was a new born and i was having problems with painful nipples and I think it might be the wrong type of teat now he is 8 months?

I looked it up on the internet and it said that he should be on a fast teat, but no explaination as to what that means? Is that different to what i have? The one i have has only 1 hole in it, would that be the slowness? I dont know.

I have tried giving him formula in the bottle i have and he isnt having any of it, just pushes it away. I have tried getting my husband to feed it to him but still no.

The options i am left with are either that he doesnt like formula (though he will drink it out of a sippy cup with his meals. But i dont think this will work in the night as sippy cup drinking is half on the floor and the rest down his front at present) Or i am using the wrong type of bottle?

Help and Advice much needed! Thanx

I wouldn't bother with a bottle at this age as babies should be weaned off at a year but Tyler doesn't really take one anyway, never has.

I am doing as you are dropping back etc as feeding has become painful recently and we've dropped her dummy so she was starting to use me as one, and as she has a quite bad tongue tie the constant sucking hurt like mad. Anyway I use avent bottles with a no4 teat which is fast flow. There's no way she would take 7oz from a beaker so have used a bottle until needs be. Do u cook with formula? F has had rice pudding, cheese sauce etc made with formula so dunno if that's helped her accept the taste? Avent also do follow on plastic teat type things that fit there bottles. He may prefer the shape as its more 'beakerish' but.easier with larger volumes and for u to feed him etc x

Hi! So good to see my DD buddy. What are you suggesting hun? That I keep breast feeding all the feeds until a year? and then how do i do it? I would but I was going to try Gina's idea of slowly watering down the night feeds to stop him feeding 4 times a night which he still does and also he has started biting me, OW, so i really need to find alternatives

Cheers Lettie! Avent No.4 I'm coming to find you

No don't do that! Feed if he needs it! Can't stand that woman think her bf advice is terrible and encourages new mums to fail bfing with her schedules etc!

We use a nuby cup with a spout.

Tyler is up a lot at night, have u read the dr sears sleep book? It's very co sleeping based BUT I think it has some good information on what he calls 'nursing to sleep' which is about daddy helping getting baby off without mummy feeding (might be on his website? Worth a look for reference). Tbh we haven't tried it at all and I CBA as we cosleep and I get more sleep doing that than putting Tyler through stress 'sleep training' it won't last forever. It is also totally normal for them to be up multiple times a night and not bfing won't necessarily stop that happening. Also worth trying Elizabeth pantly no cry sleep solution and pinky McKay sleeping like a baby all bf friendly if you are wanting to carry on.

My wonder weeks app says this is the age where a lot of mums struggle and find it hard to carry on but it's apparently worse persevering! I know what your going through sometimes I think I've had enough but I'm too stubborn lol!

I'll PM you some good advice I had on biting, just need to find it.

If you want to start using a bottle I would invest in a larger teat than size 1. Will was off that by time he was 8 weeks xxx

Hey Star! Long time no see!

Agree with Pos! I had H off that teat by the time she was 12 weeks old, she's currently on no.3 size at 7 months but could do with going up to size 4 now. They get incredibly frustrated and angry when the flow isn't quick enough for them x

My lo refused a bottle up until 6.5 months. She finally accepted it when I offered it during a meal in her high chair, and now will take it anywhere. I have her on a sippy cup too, but she will only take little sips from it still. I wanted to slowly cut back on bf, and now I only bf before bed, through the night and in the morning. I know it's not true for everyone, but my lo has gone from waking 3-4 times a night for a feed to once, sometimes twice. Also, she is only on size 2 teats, but I first gave her size 1 when she finally took the bottle. She won't take formula warmed up either, it has to be room temp. Xx
