I'm planning to breastfeed, well hopefully! I also want to express so that the Oh can help with feeding. However, would it be too hard to just use a manual breast pump? Electric ones are expensive but it is really worth investing in one?

Electric ones are amazing and if you ant one and can afford one, go for it; I would get 150mls off each breast (so 300mls all in all) in about 15 minutes on an electric pump which in the early days was sometimes 3 feeds. Saying that, I have never tried a manual so can't comment, but I don't think they are as efficient as the electric ones xxxx

It looks a very good price!

However, I do see some mixed reviews though I've seen that for all breast pumps really!

I couldn't BF and so express-plus-formula fed DS at first.

Manual pumping nearly made me give up.

Manual pumping is hella lot of effort for very little reward.

Electric pump will pay for itself.

Maybe hire one when LO is here and see how you get on. If you then decide you wanna pump, at least you've already tried one so you know what you're getting into. Xx

Manual pumping is definitely very difficult! I've been practicing expressing occasionally and all I've been able to manage is just under 1 oz. But I suppose expressing at all before baby has been born or milk coming through is quite an achievement!

I bought a cheapy manual one first to see how I get on with BF. I done one of those classes on it and the lady said worth starting off on a cheap manual and it's only a tenner lost then upgrade to electric pump when I'm ready. Don't want to buy an electric one if I have trouble with my milk.

I'm hoping to BF and express too but not committing to anything first. First thing first - see how I get on with BF in the first place and then see whether expressing is an option - I might look into hiring one and then progressing from there. I've decided to take it day-by-day. However, the Medela pumps seem very popular - if things go well I might get one of those or Tommee Tippee for convenience as I already have TT bottles.

To add to my previous post, I had the Medela Swing. Amazing machine xxx

I have all Tommee Tippee stuff, and did with DS.

I got the lactaline pump from argos. It's the one I had last time so I know it works well for me, it's one of the cheapest dual pumps, and because I was storing I didn't need to feed direct from the bottles, so I was pumping into the bottles that come with it, and pouring that into TT storage pots. The pots slot straight into TT bottles... Done.

I baught the tommee tippee electric one f3om toys r us today - in sale for £50 bargain!!!!

i used a manual with my son and hardly expressed due to not being able to express much, my little girl is in nicu atm so having to express more than feed atm so the hospital lent me a medula electric double pump and it was amazing and i bought the medula swing for home use and its brilliant, ive only bought the single which was expensive enough at 130 pound but its worth the money if you need to express alot xxx

I have a good.milk supply but just cannot express. I have tried.a.manual pump and nothing comes.out.hardly. I tried.to hand.express but cant fathom it out but s midwife expressed my milk on Trinity ward to cup feed my newborn while I got thehang of bf and she got loads out. I tried eexpressing at the end if my pregnancy to try and bring labour on, it didn't but I do believe it made my milk supply good for when baby was born.

Sorry for all the full.stops, cant get on with my new phone

Thanks for all of the replies! I'm just going to see what happens when the baby is born before I make any purchases and see how I get on breastfeeding!

I've done this. I've bought a manual TT one for £11 and will see how I get on. My friend had a really good experience with a manual pump so I do think it can depend a lot on the individual xx
