Has anyone any experience of having a newborn baby with a breast abscess? Rosie developed mastitis in her breast tissue when she was 3 weeks old, it started to develop into an abscess when a locum doctor (prick) squeezed her nipple and then prescribed the incorrect dose of anti-biotic for her weight.
It got worse for a week before I demanded that the paediatrician did something about it, had visited the childrens ward three times with her prior to this. They tried to put a canula into every vein going without success, Steve and I had to hold her little body down whilst the doctor tried putting a needle in countless times. She told us on the last attempt that if it didnt work they would have to put it into her scalp; luckily it worked in her foot. Rosie was now able to have IV antibiotics but had to stay in hospital overnight. The abscess was huge, almost the size of a pingpong ball under her nipple and an angry red colour.
The following day we ended up taking her to Bristol Childrens Hospital as Gloucester said that they were not comfortable with dealing with it. It burst before they had a chance to lance it, they put a numbing agent on it and covered it with a dressing - it was disgusting, the doctor squeezed at least a tablespoon of greeny yellow pus out of the top of her nipple, it was heartbreaking to watch.
I had not been allowed to breastfeed her for hours as they told me that at Bristol they might want to give her a GA to operate on her nipple; we got stuck in a traffic jam on the M5, Rosie screaming and begging to be fed almost sent me over the edge! When we got to the hospital we had to wait for a while to be seen, all the time Rosie crying her heart out for milk. I finally latched her on as the doctor squeezed her nipple to keep her calm, it was something that I would not wish upon anyone.
I have only heard of one other baby who had this, I just wanted to hear anyone else's experiences of this. Thanks for reading
