Jacob is 7 months (already ) and he loves to feed himself. He eats toast, rusks and some white chocolate  the rest of his food is pure's which i spoon feed him but his main diet is still milk. I was wondering what else i can give him to feed himself? he has no teeth yet and tbh when he is feeding himself i am like a fanny in a fit thinking he will choke. He seems to like cauliflower and loves fruit. I really would prefere him to feed himself but i'm at a loss as to what to give him xx

mash potato my kids loved i just gave them a spoon and left them to it thin enough for them not to choke really and if they needed some help i was on call with another spoon ready and waiting :)

At 7 months just give him anything. Steamed veggies cut in to batons or shapes that are easy to hold. Scrambled eggs are good too. They start off grabbing hands full but they soon fine tune their pincer grip and when they do it's lovely to watch them eat things so gently and delicately. I just put everything on her tray and let her crack on. the sooner you do it the better as they lose their gag reflex as time goes on. there's a difference between gagging and choking. Gagging is normal and how the clear things. Dont hit them or bang their backs or your frighten them. I bottled out on BLW from the start but I will be this time. :)

But what if he bites off a lump of carrot or someting? Do i rake it out or let him get on with it? I was gonna give him a yorkshire pud last week but i bottled out? Could he really eat anything? xx

i exclusively blw mine from the start.. which was 5 1/2 months for us.

by 7 months you can pretty much give them anything, veg - brocolli, cauliflower, carrots and salad bits like cucumber, peppers, tomato and any steamed meats like chicken etc

about choking - children develop a way of dislodging food themselves, you just have to let them do it. if you smack them on the back or shove your fingers down their throat it will frighten them and panic yourself! they use their tongue to move the food back up their throat into their mouths relitively quickly after 2/3 times.. and theyre much more confiedent and happy with that. mine only ever choked once when i had to intervene and they were perfectly fine by 7months.

oh and lisa said about scrambled eggs - mine were more confident with an omlette cut into strips to begin with so they could grab it easily :)

grilled veggies are great too like courgette/aubergine cut into slices, also grated cheese, toast/bread... pretty much anything!

yorkshire is ok i gave my son all are food from the start only had puree for like 4 weeks thats it x

Nice one Tezzy!! I feel really positive now! I might even give him a mini xmas dinner on friday :yay: I love watching him eat, he gets so much pleasure from it xx

if you have any more questions feel free to ask!! i LOVE talking about BLW..

I found broccoli great and cauliflower and I always left a little stalk on for them to hold :)

I didn't do exclusive blw but here we done a combination of mush to begin with and then gave them some chunks :)

Mini weetabix are good too xx

oh yes i second the mini wheetabix!! theyre great!

Like Tezzy said just let him crack on. The first time they bite a big chunk off you'll have to practically sit on your hands to stop yourself raking it out but seriously, choking is extremely rare - he might gag like I said but give him chance and he'll get it up :)

Jack has everything we have, he even had roast beef before he had teeth, cruel I know  as tezzy and lisa have already said choking is very rare, but gagging is something totally different, try not to panic and sit on your hands, let him try and clear it himself! Jack use to gag and was sometimes sick but it never detered him and I've seen him trying to ram food in while still gagging and been sick but he soon learnt! It is the best thing I have ever done with him! I met alot of resistence especially with the MIL and my grandparents but they sit there with their mouths open while he feeds himself a sandwich :cloud9: while his cousin is still been force fed purée. Can't wait for him to join in at Xmas dinner

Sorry that was a bit long but it's a subject I'm very passionate about

Hey, the longer the better, i need input

I'm so excited now you girls have given the green light, i'm gonna let him munch on just about everything we eat :) He's gonna love his christmas dinner :yay: The wheetabix mini's, do you mut milk on tho? Sorry if that sounds extremely dumb xx

Never tried them but jack happily munches on dry rice cake which is just as dry as weetabix! Tonight he has has brocolli, leek, White cabbage, roast parsnip and shepard pie made with root mash, then peachesand dried apricot for pud! It is messy and at first I was worried he wasn't getting enough but he decided to drop a milk feed so he must have been :)

i agree with the others, just give him whatever you're eating! we started weaning at 3 months, so obv couldnt do blw at first, but the HV advised me to give it a go at about 5 months cos she started refusing to be spoon fed and it was the best thing i ever did! with meat and stuff, even if they just suck at it, whcih they will at first, they still get all the nutrients and stuff out of it. katie got really good at munching things up before she had teeth, their gums are so hard!

i've only had 1 choking incident, but at first i had a hell of a lot of the sitting on my hands moments! i'll never forget sitting at the dining table with my mum and dad and she was eating chicken strips and my dad was having a dicky fit saying she was gona choke, but he seemed oblivious to the fact that she'd just spat a big lump out! they're so clever how they do it!

if i can make it close to 6 months this time i'll defo be blw!!

well he loves scrambled eggs but i think the dog got more of it off the floor than he ate. I gave him a chip tonight and he made so many Mmmmmmm noises and really enjoyed it. I know chips aren't healthy but i was having some and he really wanted one  I was eating corn on the cob yesterday and he was clamming for some but i was to scared to give him it :) I was gonna make him an omelette but i am ashamed to admit i do not know how to make them  xx
