At the moment I'm giving Phoebe porridge for breakfast and puree food for tea but I was thinking of trying a bit of BLW for her lunch now she's 6 months.
I gave her some toast the last few days but she keeps pulling really big bits off in her mouth. I know a bit of gagging is normal, but is it ok for them to have big chunks if they've pulled it off themselves? I had to take it off her because she just tries to shove the whole lot in her mouth all at once and I kept panicking.
Advise pleeease? :)

K shovels it in, honestly you wouldn't believe how much he puts in! They just gag a bit sometimes or it falls out, main thing is they are learning how much to put in and what to do by practicing. Have you read the Jill rapley book? It really puts your mind and ease with the gagging and choking worries.

We gave leandro toast too(after your pic hehe) but we didn't toast it too long and he did the sane but kept making it all soggy and tore it to shred too. I've read somewhere that the gagging is normal and with blw you just always have to be on hand. Were always giving leandro things to gum at recently he loves things like cucumber and tomatoe like a hard one maybe try something harder she can't break but get a taste of? Xxx

Thanks. So should I just let her carry on if she puts big bits in her mouth? Is it ok for her to try and swallow big bits? x

Ethan does this too hun- sooner or later if its too big a bit he brings it back out either by spitting, gagging or coughing! Don't think ur meant to put ur hand in their mouth to retrieve anything so i'd just leave her to it and just observe. As long as she is making noises air is getting thru.....u can't cough or gag if u r choking- it is a bit scary but I would let her carry on, am sure she will get the hang of it soon xxx

I agree just let her get on with it, you can push things down further if you try to get them out. Chip sized piece they can hold are best, I cut all our veg into fingers and toast etc. have you tried giving her things like banana and rice cakes as they melt down easily for them? The only thing that scares me sometimes is meat as it doesn't really break down so if gags more on it. Tonight he had toad in the hole and loved it!

Toad in the hole- v impressive! Does Kynon have any teeth yet Sarah? Ethan doesn't but he did manage shepherds pie the other day- you'd think they wouldn't manage it but somehow they do!!

No teeth yet! Not sure how he manages think gums work better than we think!

I've been giving Angel toast for a few weeks now and she bites off massive chunks and like you I panic a lot as well lol but today was the first day she's ever coughed/gagged and she chose to do it in the ferry restaurant so I looked terrible lol. I read in my first aid book if you can clearly see something in their mouth and it's close to the front then you can try and get it out but if it's stuck to the roof of their mouth or very far back don't try and get it, just turn her downwards and give her 5 slaps on the back. Must admit today did scare me but I realised their bread was weird thought it was toasted quite well but it was really soggy!! xx

That's amazing! You would never think they could eat simething like sausage with no teeth!

I know! I cut it along the length tho so it was probably easier to fall apart. He kind of chews stuff for ages so it breaks down in his mouth. I've often got him out of the high chair thinking he was finished to find he is still sucking on something in his mouth!

Lol! Once ethan was playing in his activity pod and about an hour after breakfast out came a piece of half eaten toast! He must have been hiding it in the roof of his mouth! Lol! Tonight he had a real good go at cauliflower cheese- I was v impressed!

Choking was something that really worried me when weaning my lo - he seemed to choke on almost everything! I found once I relaxed a little and just let him do what he needed to do it was a lot easier for both of us ha! Good luck with the blw :)
