Hi,

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I have really blocked ducts in one of my breasts and I have tried everything the midwife has uggested - massaging, expressing, cabbage leaves, baths, hot flannels etc etc, but nothing has worked. I am perserving wth it, but I'm terrified of developing mastitis. Does anyone have any advice or tips they cpuld offer me PLEASE!!

Its so painful!!

Thanks xx

Keep offering that breast and try and get your DD to fully drain it. Expressing helped me slightly but it was only feeding from that breast with my DD's chin against the sore area that helped. Also warm compresses and massaging in the bath (under the water) helped.

Kellymom is full of useful info http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/mastitis.html

Heat, heat and more heat. Hot water bottle pressed against the affected area is fantastic, do it before a feed as it "melts" the blocked milk and helps it to flow. Feed as much as you can from that side, yes it hurts but it hurts even more if you get more engorged. Paracetomal is ok to take if you follow directions. hope you get better soon x

Hi Emma

My left boob used to be like this and the only thing that worked for me was a really hot bath and when my boob was under water I gave it a really hard massage (which really hurt) and hand expressed and then it started to free up. Every day for the first couple of weeks I'd always really massage the lumpy bits whilst I was under a hot shower.

Don't worry, the lumpy stage will soon pass - I know that might not be much comfort at the moment but soon your boobs will be lovely and smooth again

Lucy x
