hi ladies,
this question isnt 4 me!! my sis had a baby 2 weeks ago and ahs had trouble bfeeding so she isexpressing, but she has just phoned me and both her nipples r bleeding and it has turned the milk pink!!! should she still give this to LO?? she has milk in the fridge as well that isnt pink but she stores whatever she expresses and is worried about storing the milk with blood in it??? i couldnt offer any advice really as i dont express that much!!
any advice much appreciated xxx

If her nipples are bleeding then I'd say she isn't expressing properly. Mine never bled and certainly it should not hurt to express.

All I can think is she maybe got a tiny nick on her nipple somewhere and because of the suction it caused it to bleed while the milk was pumping.

I'd not use the milk personally. I don't know if or what the medical advice is on that but for me I'd ditch anything that had blood in it.

Hopefully her nipples will have time to heal and if she expresses some more they won't bleed. If they do she needs to adjust position and maybe also to have less suction to start and build up to the stronger suction over time. Not really good to go in at high suction when first starting to express.

I agree with Sherlock. Although blood in the milk won't harm the baby (plenty of women feed with bleeding nipples!) I don't really think she should store it and use it if she has the choice.
Rather she needs to talk to her HV about positioning etc. cos like sherlock said it's not normal to bleed, unless she has a blister or something which is bleeding.

It all sounds like torture! hat off to anyone that has bleeding nips and can still feed!
