i was wondering can you breastfeed as well as bottle feed??

if not when can you start expressing???

Hi there, as far as I am aware hunnie you can breastfeed and bottle feed. I breastfeed Ruby and she also has a formula bottle at night time. Admittedly for the first 4 months she only had breast but my best friend has been doing both from day one.

Bottle feed with expressed milk or with formula?

At first I would solely breastfeed as that builds up your supply. Babies are better at getting milk out than any expresser.Personally I wouldn't introduce formula as that interferes with your milk supply. It's best to try and exclusively feed off of the breast for the first 6 weeks. I got mastitis several times and couldn't bear to feed as I felt too ill to even hold Ella, although that would have been best to help clear it, instead I expressed. I also gave Ella a handful of formula top ups when wrongly advised by my HV. I believe that the recurrent mastitis and the top-ups stopped my supply from adjusting as it should. Ella is mostly breastfed but has one bottle of expressed milk before bedtime.

Hey Rosieroo, sounds like Ella & Ruby have alot in common!!!!!!

thanks for everyones help

i was asking about formula and breastfeeding :)

She's definately used to that bottle now, it takes me two lots of expressing to get off (she'll take up to 12oz and has done for over 2 months  ) but then she sleeps really well. I fed her off of the breast on Thursday night and she was awake every 2 hours (we were away so I couldn't take her milk with me that I had expressed as I didn't have a fridge). So I'm happy with sitting and expressing before bed and first thing if it means she settles well! Though I do wonder what the neighbour thinks is going on ;)

hi hun
for me it was all about balance - i fed alex from the breast only for bout 5 weeks. then he had one expressed feed a day, then a bit later when he was taking so much expressed milk that i struggled to find the time to do it we gave him formula for one feed (or more on odd occasions when we went out etc) as dh likes to give bedtime feed. this was fine and my supply was never a problem. however once i started back to work and he was only having 2 feeds a day from the boob it started to slow up. he was getting frustrated at how slowly it was coming and as he is on solids aswell i now only do his very first feed in the morning and the rest are formula.

i'm sure if i hadnt gone back to work i'd have been fine but never mind - needs must! Still i fed him for 6 months so am very proud and i still have my morning feed in bed with him!

good luck !

24 hours, though some sites say 48 :? It lasts for up to 3 months in the freezer though and thaws easily :)

There is a sticky on here with loads of breast feeding web sites. I dont know how to get them on too my post. Not very good with computers!

Breast feeding is the best thing I have ever done. I did get sore to start with but after two weeks i was fine. My HV says I can keep the milk for 7 days. But only ever kept it for 3/4 days.

After 6 weeks you can start to express and give your baby a bottle. topping up with formula may not help your baby sleep longer at night. It thats when you would want the formula?
