My 5 month old occasionally has really fixed stares and doesn't see things infront of her when she's staring. I really have to come right upto her in her face for her to snap out of it. She also sometimes does a chewing motion with her mouth at the same time that looks like like saying mamamama without noise. I've read that this could be a sign of autism in children but she is very aware bright as a button and interacts very well with people although does prefer to be with me (like most babies I think?) also read it could be signs of an epileptic episode. Is this just normal for babies does anyone else's baby do it ?? Xx

Think I've caught Thomas doing this once, he was laying down and had a fixed stare, either that or he'd fallen asleep with his eyes open!!

I would check her temperature when she does this in case it is a febrial convulsion which a lot of babies do have. It may not be this just something to check x

My little girl often stares into space and how into a dream. I just assumed this was normal and like we would do at times. Eek you have me worried now

My son's never done this, but my daughter used to do it all the time (less so now, but occasionally I have to physically stand in front of her and hold her shoulders to get her to stop staring into space!). It may just mean you're in for a very bright daughter who has a vivid imagination - that's how my daughter's turned out.

It never once entered my head that there was anything sinister about it - it really sounds just like daydreaming. Febrile convulsions involve loss of consciousness and fitting and to be honest, you would have noticed if she was having a fit.

I think it's just daydreaming, the same as we do. I really wouldn't worry at all, it just means something has captured their attention & they're thinking about it!

I would not wish to worry you but I would discuss with your doctor. My nephew recently suffered a series of seizures (he is 10mths old). I have witnessed one and they do not necessarily involve any kind of movement or convulsion. In his case he is completely still and absent in terms of being non responsive & having a day dream look. He also makes a 'clicking/gulping' noise when this happens & is then very sleepy.

There are such things as absent seizures where it may appear just like daydreaming & can go unnoticed. There are two different types of fitting; one of which doesn't involve convulsions. It's probably not likely in your case but may be worth a mention to your doc just to reassure you.

Don't want to scaremonger but this is my experience. Xxx

I should say I'm only going on this recent experience but the likelihood of this being the case is slim! Sounds as though others have experience of their LO doing the same with no suspected problems.

Staring into space is also a sign of tiredness. Austin does it a lot

Harry will do it too occasionally, can snap him out quite quick. If is happening a lot n u r worried hun it's always best to go get it checked out.

My baby does this quite a lot. I've always taken it to mean he's tired as if I try and put him down when he does it he goes off to sleep with minimal fuss :)

Luke does this and I have to claps hands to get him
Out of it. Doesn't sound like a fit to me.

Hayley stares into space at times and also does a chewing motion at times. To be honest I never really thought anything of it. She doesn't stare into space often, so I recon there's nothing more to it. And I assumed the chewing was to ease her teething pains? Or she's just copying me after seeing me eating so getting ready for having real food herself?
